Hi newbie to the site

My farther in law is having a problem with his 1998 1.3 mpi with only 20000 on the clock.

When your driving along and lift your foot the accelerator there is know deceleration. So far he has changed the inlet and throttle gaskets(cleaned), changed the plugs and leads, thermostat and had ago at resetting the throttle but the car is still pulling its self along.

Could this problem be map sensor related

Any advice would be appreciated

Thanks

Daryl

sounds like a throttle body electrical fault, most likely the idle stepper motor is jammed

also have you check if the throttle cable too tight?

Hi thanks for the quick reply thottle cable is checked and fine. Im going to have a look tomorrow what do you mean by idle stepper motor?

Thanks Daryl

it's an integral part of the throttle body assembly, and sadly you cannot replace it seperately..

i can't put it into words very easily, but the idle stepper motor turns a geared shaft which acts on a lever to partially open the throttle plate to maintain an idle speed, sometimes the motor gets stuck after it exceeds a certain position.. the other favourite failure point in the throttle body is the idle switch, this is just a pair of contacts which close when the the throttle is closed and tells the ecu that the engine is idling or on overrun. this could also possibly be the cause of the fault..

without a diagnostics check it's all fairly circumstantial anyway.

This is an English language site. so it's best to translate to English, I've done so below so that others can give you the answer (as I do not know).  Good luck.

Do you have VCDS or you are close to a repair shop to check your Felicia for possible errors?

The repair shop will have one like this and will find any possible errors.

It may be different in Chile and Greece but in UK you would be very lucky to find a Dealership/garage/mechanic that has a scan tool, VCDS or other, that has a program for a 1995 Felicia.

A Ross-Tech (VCDS provider) 2007 chart shows 1995 (6U) Felicia needs a Felicia adapter to their cable.  Generic scan tools can come with lots of different adapters and leads as pre OBD2 (1996  OBD2 made mandatory for all cars sold in the United States) manufacturers had their own version which could even differ on their cars.  These adapters and leads tend to get lost/mislaid with the passing of time due to lack of use (unless the garage/mechanic specialises in the model.

And I've just read, according to Wikki,  VW in 1968 "introduces the first on-board computer system" which explains to me why their computers programs got so complex on their later vehicles.

If I have understood correctly, according to a previous Briskoda posters the VCDS may cover engine, ABS, air bag, immobiliser and diesel electronics, the system will read and operate very slowly compared to later cars and more modern models.

Sorry I meant to put the engine reporting on a scan tool might give information that might help find but (not necessarily identify cause(s) but often the usual basics of diagnostics will apply regardless, such as already mentioned -

  • battery - or connections and cables on and to and from the battery including earths
  • ignition - cables and connections, spark plugs (clean or replace as required), coil(s)
  • air - in or out or escaping, clean and unrestricted engine air filter and air filter housing, hoses, or air leaks such as vacuum leaks
  • petrol - petrol quality supplied and in car's fuel tank, clear and unrestricted tank, fuel filter and supply pipes/hoses, fuel pump, clean throttle body, injector(s), (carb?)
  • electronics - sensors clean and fully operating, electric wires and connectors all clean (inside and outside) secure and  protected
  • mechanical -  pedal, throttle connections and operation, cables and spring(s)
  • engine - faults, running hot, head gasket failure, other.

A full and proper service of the engine (and whole car) can often sort many issues in many instances (but not all obviously).

Very easy for a VW group driver to find such a service here in Greece and of course it's Free.

The pros can buy it, examples:

https://auto-diagnosis.gr/html/vcds.html

https://www.car.gr/parts/?ca=7&models=Audi Vag-com&sort=relevance

You can buy a portable scanner too

Free?  Free??  Not free in the UK unless a Briskoda member offers and then does the program cover 1995 Felicia and have the Felicia adapter for the cable.

You would know better than me but at a very quick look, your VCDS link has the VCDS with "has access to all control modules that require the KWP-2000 (2001 + Teves Mk. 60 ABS, numerous 2002 + modules), KWP6000 (CAN) and/or KWP7000 (UDS) protocols" does that cover 1995 Felicia (I have no idea).  And has "Package contents: - VCDS Hex V2 diagnostic tool - PC connection cable (usb) - Installation CD" no mention of 1995 Felicia adapter.

Second link show from 1996 unless I have missed something - is V2 compatible with 1995 Felicia?

Third link, again I might be missing it but those scanners, at a very brief look, do not say VW so would only perhaps cover generic OBD2 stuff and not VW 1995 Felicia specific for more detailed specific reporting of modules/sensors.

VW gets away with lots more chargeable stuff in the UK than Europe, we have always been a soft touch and expect lower standards and more and higher pricing on car items and services, you would wince at what we in the UK pay for parts and labour for the same cars you have.

Was free and will stay free (as the extra sugar-milk-biscuit-cinammon-napkin etc in the Café), every VW group repair shop here has it and sometimes even without an appointment can help you with a scan.

Wow !!   I mean wow!

Could you please suggest that to VWSkoda UK, the UK VWSkoda Dealerships, most garages and mechanics in the UK, please.

Free !!????!!

IIRC VWSkoda Dealership prices seem to go from £65 to £140 just to plug the machine in, perhaps they might give discount or exclude the cost if you have some expensive work done as a result of this (a Mercs specialist does at least) but I'm not sure VWSkoda Dealerships do.  As I put before the prices you pay for parts and labour seem (much) lower than in UK.

Do bear in mind a scan report needs proper and further checking, interpretation and diagnosis, just because a sensor gives unacceptable readings it does not necessarily mean it is a fault with, or at, that sensor.  The report has to be interpreted normally, just changing that part could be what we call "shooting the messenger" that is blaming the messenger for the news it gives you rather than dealing with the cause of the news given.

Another Free examples:

1) You go to the gas station, say ''fill it up'' and while you are waiting you can say to the employee to clean your front or your rear wind shield or check the tyres air pressure.

2) You go to the gas station, say "put in 20 euros" and after you pay you move the car to the side and you check the tyre air pressure (they have at least 2 devices) or cleaning the wind shields by yourself because the station has already 1-2 buckets with water+soap and the tool with sponge-blade ready for this reason.

3) You go to the gas station, you don't fill gasoline, you just move the car to the side to check the tyre air pressure or cleaning both the wind shields. You just say a ''thank you" or move your hand as ''Hello" to the employee and you go.

Also Free: except the mentioned bucket there is a faucet for tap water (for example you can refill your plastic canister) plus a 4-5 ltr plastic canteen to fill it and throw water on the hood (for example it dirty) and in any of the above cases you can use their WC (they have a shared for the customers).

@Bernardor have you done any checks?

Battery not good charged

Dirty air filter

Dirty throttle

MAP needs spray cleaning

Spark plugs dirty

While driving you have any problems? The car accelerates good or hesitates?

Sorry but when doing this sort of thing over the internet we don't see, hear, smell and feel what you have or can so it just leaves questions.

Taking good quality photos (in landscape, not portrait) and posting them here can often help to save confusion and help spot something that might be not expected.

So, the questions, sorry.

How is the battery good, any measurements, when were these measurements taken, did you check the electrolyte level in each cell, (I have been told many times a battery is good when it was not)?

Did you check the battery terminals are clean, check the battery terminal clamps are clean inside and out, make sure the clamps are securely fitted to the battery terminals, that the main cables and their connections (including earths) are clean, secure and protected, all other electrical cables, wires, earths are clean, secure and protected?

Filter new (and hopefully) clean is good but what about the filter box and hoses off this are they clear and clean?

In what way is the MAP OK?

How are the spark plugs OK, how were they tested, how old are they, how much use, are they genuine or possibly counterfeit?

In your language is: ¿Tiene algún problema mientras conduce? ¿El coche acelera bien o duda?
