VRS DMF Rattling - Stealership

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Last few weeks been getting a rattling coming from the car on tick over, it was intermitent in volume. Did my research and thought it might be an auxiliary belt tensioner, an alternator cluth or engine mount failure. Took it to the stealerships who said it was the DMF and that it would cost £828 to replace just the DMF. Fair play to the mechanic, he seemed a sound lad.

I was gutted for many reasons... I started wondeing why my DMF would have failed as my car is stock, no remaps, nothing. Its less than 5 years old with 48K miles , I don't ride the clutch, I have kids in the car so drive smothly (MPG's prove that), I start the car with the cluth depressed, etc. My thoughts ar that the part is not fit for purpose.

Decided to call Skoda Customer care to ask whether they would help as the car is less than 7 years old, less than 100K miles to see if they could offer any factory/customer good will. They told me that the local Stealership would have to contact them to ask for good will, so I rang the Stealership back and asked them to call customer support... which is my current status, need to chase them up.

Just wondering whether any of you geniuses have any ideas on the following :-

1-OEM stock DMF's, seem like a weak point of the VRS

2-When you change a DMF, shouldn't you also replace the clutch?

3-Best replacement rather than OEM such as the Sachs kit http://www.vwspares.co.uk/product_info.php?products_id=527 What else would you need (bearing)

4-Would you trust a non VAG dealer/mechanic to do the work

5-Any other advice

Thanks in advance guys

Most manufacturers have had DMF failures, Ford Transit is the worst as swarf from the starter bendix ruins the DMF. The DMF in a Fabia is no different to 99% of the DMFs in use across other brands, so not a weak point by any means. The dealer quoted price is ridiculous. I see the VW spares kit has gone up in price by £50, but it's still a good deal. Any decent mechanic can do the DMF and clutch in 4 hours.

Thanks for the info MoggyTech. I take it that would be the right kit then and would that be a SMF?

That kit comes with a genuine DMF

i have also noticed this with my car but it only seems to do it when its cold tho :S

Its apparently the rubber bits on the DMF that breaks down, most cars will only do it when cold but if severe it'll be all the time!

that price does seem very high for just DMF change, and theres no reason why you shouldnt take it to a smaller garage. they will carry out same work at much lower cost.

myself personally if i was getting DMF changed i wud change clutch, saves having to pay again to get gearbox removed again.

Does anyone know if, once they make a rattling noise all the while, there in any risk of damaging the gearbox?

The reason I ask is that I need to drive it until the parts come and I can get it in the mechanics...

I don't get any issues with gear change, clutch is smooth.

Went to order the clutch kit today from AVS Car Parts only to find that the parts been de-empthasised on the web site. Spoke to the guy there who says that they are having trouble getting the SACH kits in.

Does anyone know anywhere to source a flywheel and clutch kit from?

http://www.gsfcarparts.com/ i would have thought you can get the clutch etc from these boys!

Had a look and they dion't seem to have the clutch for the VRS or a flywheel unfortunately but thanks for your effort

Call them mate. I think youll be surprised with what they have in stock. Big network of outlets too!

Ouch, that's a lot of money! The price in the TPS book for the OEM clutch kit (complete with DMF) is, if my memory is correct, £253 RRP (+ VAT). I believe I'm correct in saying the clutch is actually made by Sachs (there's 2 manufacturers listed - one's Sachs, can't remember the other one).

Euro Car parts have both Sacks and LUK kits in stock.

Dan,

Rang them and your right, they have the parts. Bit dearer but not bad all in all ! Thanks!

Cheers for your help guys

Spot on - They come up much cheaper. There were two SACHS DMF's, one was £250 and the other £350. Difference was once comes with a clutch (unless you looked at the picture you wouldn't know). Kit and SACHS slave cyclinder (think this is the Concentric Hydraulic kit?) for less than £400.
