Fabia 1.4 auto gearbox selector problem

Featured Replies

Hi there, new to the site and it looks good.

I have looked and can't see this issue elsewhere. My father in law has a 1.4 petrol auto 52 plate Fabia. The gearshift seems to have reached the end of its adjustment and cannot be adjusted to make it select correctly. It was adjusted a few weeks ago by a local garage (not an expert) and he now suggests that the car is a write off as the linkage cannot be adjusted any more. Seems a bit extreme to me as it is not that old and only done 48k miles. It there a common problem here or does the gearbox fail in some catastrophic way?

Any good ideas appreciated.

Martin.

Yeah, definately sounds like a write off. I'll take it off your hands for £25

I just checked my Haynes manual, it covers selector cable removal, refitting and adjustment; it's listed as a 3-spanner job - i.e. a competent DIY mechanic should be able to do it.

There are two linkages, one between the lever and the gearbox, another between the lever and the steering lock.

The gear position display looks to be driven from a multi position switch at the gearbox end - does the display match the lever position?

£25... that sounds better than his friendly local garage is offering!

Not seen the car, it was towed there at the weekend. It sounded a bit far fetched to me, which is why I asked. I'll pick up a Haynes manual, buy the three spanners and set to work I think!

Many thanks for the input.

Martin.
