Towing.

Featured Replies

Hi,

If anybody out there is towing with their Roomster pherhaps you could let me have your experinces, good and bad.

I am thinking about a trailer tent not sure what they weigh but i am sure that the car can easily manage it. i looked uo the towing capabilities of the face lift Scout and that said 1200kg braked.

My 1.9 should be able to do the same i would have thought.

Thanks

All the 1.9 diesels' towing limit is indeed 1200kg. I tow a caravan with a gross weight of just under 900kg with the 1.6 Tiptronic which has a 1000kg limit with no problems at all, except the fuel consumption increases by about a quarter but a lot of that is due to the increased wind resistance. I would have got a 1.9 if I hadn't needed an automatic as I know it would tow even better.

Even a very large trailer tent is unlikely to be more than 750kg and will have a low profile so you're ulikely to even notice it much.

Hi Jonathan

The way to check the legal towing weights of any car is look ate the Data plate (usually) under the bonnet.

It will have four or five sets of numbers on it, and will look like :

900

900

1500

2400

500

where as the first two numbers are the max axle weights, the third is the max vehicle weight and the last is the max Train weight (car & trailer)

so all you do is deduct the (in my example) 1500 from the 2400 and this would give you a towing weight of 900kgs

And the fifth number is for a un-braked trailer (not always listed)

( these numbers are just examples)

But these figurers are the ones to go off, as if you get pulled by the police etc, are the ones they will check, and if over you will be done !

I've towed both a large trailer tent and a small caravan (900kg) with a Roomster 1.9Tdi, with no problems at all. I'm sure the short rear overhang and the fairly stiff rear suspension both help.

Guys, that is brilliant thanks for your response's just the kind of real world information i was looking for.

I forgot to say yesterday to watch the noseweight it's low at 45kg, but it probably won't be a problem with a trailer tent. I had to rearange the load in the caravan to get it down and I have to tow with only the gas bottle and spare wheel in the front locker.

I keep mine down by using "CalorLite" gas bottles - half the weight of standard ones. For a while, Calor were exchanging them FOC, but I think that offer has ended.

No good to me, mine is in France and still has the full size french propane bottle. We use so little gas that we had our last van 10 years and sold it with gas still in the bottle. I'm not even sure if lightweight bottles are available over there for propane although I think you can get butane in a plastic "cube".

I tow a Dandy trailer tent. It weighs 500Kg, well inside the capacity off the Roomy. Most TTs are a lot lighter than that. Mine is the 1.4 deisel & it pulls fine. Slight increase in fuel consumption, & a bit slower to 60, but then you'd expect that. The 1.9 would certainly be a bit more sprightly, but I don't regret the 1.4. Took it to Spain in 2007, France 2008 & Jersey last year. Going to Italy with it in July.

I'm about to tow with my Roomster 1.6 auto. Very light caravan at 650kg max weight, but the tow hitch nose weight is 75kg, and I only have a 50kg towbar. So something has to go out of that front locker!

Geez, what a pain!

my old 2007 1.9PD used to tow a big 4 wheel trailer used for camping with a local scout group, never really noticed the weight of the trailer unless up a steep hill,

fully loaded inside and trailer to gilwell no problems, easier on way back as scouts had eaten all the food and gas bottles empty

I have been quoted between £350 and £400 for detachable Westfalia towbars with single universal 7 pin electrics.

I was preparing my car to have the towbar fitted tomorrow - remove rear seats, spare wheel etc etc - when I spotted a Brucie Bonus in the spare wheel tray from the previous owner which the dealer knew nothing about either ...

OEM detachable towbar with dedicated OEM13 pin electrics ! :)

Connected up the electrics for a test tonight - does anyone know if a sign should be appearing on the instrument panel when a trailer is connected?

The car is 2007 and has factory fitted towbar and electrics.

Mine shows a trailer on the radio/reverse sensors when I select reverse, that's all. (13 pin electrics)
