number plate lights

Featured Replies

Evening guys and girls. I've got a wee problem.

I decided to change the c5w standard bulbs above my rear number plate for c5w l e ds (pure white). However, when you turn the headlights on they only stay on for about 3 seconds then go off again. Same thing happens when you unlock the car with automatic lights selected. Any suggestions? Oh, and the answer I'm looking for doesn't involve swapping the bulbs back :)

Welcome to the joys of the CAN system!

You'll have to change them back!

Unless you can find LED's with fitted resistors!

Because the LED's draw less than 5w per bulb the car thinks the bulb is blown so disables that circuit, Hence they only illuminate for a few seconds then turn off!

I know PIAA do LED's that are compatible with CAN bus, I had the problem in my 5 series not so long ago - tried to replace the corona ring bulbs with just normal LED's and it fired my warning lights on the dashboard. I have to say they were not cheap, each set of 501's were about £50 as far as I can remember :(

Thanks very much guys. Much appreciated

LED + resistance to give a 5W power consumption.

What isn't being consumed by the LED is consumed by the resistor and comes out as heat.

Bulb system then still sees 5W draw and is happy.

It's called cheating.

Cheezemonkhai = scientist!! :giggle:

I can't see a resistor on the flebay ones though!

All your science is belong to me!

Just my opinion but I'm kinda confused at this general >need< to fit led lighting everywhere in a vehicle! I have never ever had a numberplate light die on me and to be honest, the difference in light type is not going to be that noticable as its an idirect and hidden source.

So many people are chasing "canbus - error free" leds its hilarious!

As Cheezy says, what doesn't come out as light comes out as heat so there goes two advantages of LED's - low heat output and low power consumption! In order to make the damn things work with the candus you have to have a resistor to present a load. This resiter gets hot and consumes power, the same amount as the filament bulb! DUH!

It does smack a little of "I can change something therefore I should"!!!
