DSG vs Manual (in a Golf)

Featured Replies

Must be the way he's shifting but the manual should be quicker that what he's doing it in. This is the same bloke that when they tested a Corsa VXR, Clio 197 and Suzuki Swift Sport and the VXR set the best time on track by a good way, he said the Clio was the best and gave a really carp reason why.

Well the five door also weighs more and might have more options. But regardless of it being slower it is the DSG's consitency that is so amazing. Even a mere mortal like I can manage it. But then perhaps just in saying that the fun is to be had in a manual?

It's interesting that he said that the DSG was more economical and had lower emissions than the manual.

That's not the case with the vRS as both petrol and diesel DSG's are in a higher VED band.

Also, I thought he was useless at getting the manual off the line, let it bog down too much.

The time discrepancy between published 0-60 times and real world times is pretty common.

Manufacturers will use loads of tricks. Precise tyre pressures, awesome grip treads etc etc. They sometimes use a freakishly well powered car from the production line too. It's a stock car but just one that happens to be overpowered.

Have heard of certain tests allowing the car to roll up to a standstill as the test begins. Which just sounds plain odd to me. The car is technically doing 0 mph but actually hasn't stopped moving. It's right on the cusp of stopping but the wheels are still just moving thus it still has some momentum off the line. Personally I don't see how "0-60" can mean anything but starting from a dead standstill.

As for the DSG v's the manual, it does up shift well that DSG huh? Starting with the handbrake though, his technique could be better. He's dropping the revs too much on take off. The car squats down but then he's chasing the revs all the way through 1st.

Anyone remember that Fifth Gear test of the Audi TT DSG v the stick one ? The DSG was quicker.
