Cambelt, Major Service, Brake Fluid Pollen Filter and MOT

Featured Replies

Rang 3 dealers to get prices for this and the following are the costs for an 06 VRS - after picking myself off the floor this the prices quoted

Dealer 1) £798.12 plus £55 for Brake fluid - not sure if Pollen filter included

Dealer 2) £206 service, £55 brake Fluid, £55 MOT, £42 Pollen filter, £504 cambelt and water pump - £850 ish

Dealer 3) £247 service, £55 Brake fluid, £55 MOT, £40 Pollen, £497 cambelt and waterpump - £900ish

Now JKM quote from their site

£280 Service inc spark plugsand air and pollen filter (above may not include plugs/air filter of these)

Cambelt and water pump now POA - cambelt is £317 - so water pump no more than £75 I would have thought £400 total on the outside

Brake Fluid £39

MOT £55

Total £775

Surely someone would do this for £650 for all the work - thats crazy money for a budget brand!

I need a main dealer as it is under Skoda extended warranty. Surrey area needed! Might decide to use local specialist I trust and argue the toss that genuine parts were used! Certainly this will be our last main dealer service at these rates

Brake fluid service should be no more than £36. Pollen Filter costs £8 and can be changed in 20 seconds. All 3 are taking the micky.

JKM have just quoted me by email £371 inc VAT for Cambelt and Waterpump (no difference in charge for metal impeller) for Oct '06 Octavia vRS

So If you service the car with Dealer 2) ___________£206

Belt, Pump & Brake fluid @ JKM ________________£410

Autotrader / Nationwide MOT voucher____________ £ 27

Total £643

VW dealer did mine for around £350 including cambelt, water pump and coolant, plus oil filter change when I provided the oil.

Brake fluid change seems to be charged at £50 from most dealers these days.

I don't suppose they're anywhere south east(ish) of the country though ? Care to share ?

Thanks Everyone - looks like JKM in Portsmaouth wil get a visit for the cambelt, good tip re the nationwide MOT! Brake fluid and service will wait until they are needed as does not seem to reduce the cost of the cambelt at all!

Oh rang local VW - £1100 for the same quote as JKM!!!

dont have to be a main dealer ... warrenty should be valid still as long as its a vat registered garage ... pick a vag specialist and wont have any warenty issues . this is the same for all warrentys :)

Hi Guys

I find this very interesting reading at the prices that get quoted for repairs by dealers and the **** jobs i have seen them turn out.

I have been in the motor trade since 1971 in our family business and I still get surprised to this day by quotes and labour rates for repairs.

I still mentain that the job is only as good as the mechanic who is carring out your repair main dealer or family village garage like ours.

Hope you get sorted out with your service and cam belt at a good fair price

ditto, find a garage and mechanic you trust and know do good work and stick with them. It'll cost you less in the long run. Alternatively learn how to do basic servicing!
