Very Strange Smell - Please HELP

Featured Replies

Hello, as you can see I havent posted that often, but am in desperate need of a solution. I have an 06 Octavia Vrs TDi. It has 40k on the clock and has been serviced regularly. Tonight I noticed a strange smell coming from the car, and on hard acceleration there is a very small puff of white smoke, that isnt really worrying me, its the smell. It eminates from all over the car, from the exhaust to the engine bay. I have checked the engine, and cant see any leaks, and all the fluids seem to be at the correct levels, and the oil seems fine. The best way to describe that smell would almost be like when you put BBQ accelerant on a charcoal BBQ. Now it only started tonight, and has me quite worried. ~I had done a very short run, bout 4 miles, then had parked up for about 1.5hrs, it was only when I returned did I smell the smell.

Any ideas?

Oh, I have checked the brakes as well, I prob need new pads, but there is no rubbing.

Cheers in advance.

might be your catalytic converter on exhaust system

When I first read the thread title, I thought you must be on about Brimma!!!

Sorry, no idea...

:D :D :D :D :D

Clutch isn't starting to go is it?

If you say it smells like BBQ-accelerant, does that mean it smells like alcohol? If so, maybe it is sth as trivial as a leaking windscreen-or rear-washer tube.....just an idea. All the other liquids don't really produce such a kind of smell except when stuff is dripping onto hot parts....

funny you should say that, It is like a burning alcohol smell, the pipe for the rear washer has sprung a leak in the engine bay, and I do use screen wash, hmmm, didn't even think about that. If that is it, how do I go about fixing the hose. Please excuse my total mechanical ignorance.

Easiest way to deal with it is to find hose of similar dimensions and replace the broken hose. Taping up a leak will usually only slow it down, but some of the more serious grades of duct tape might work...

Wow, I maybe hit the spot, then....

If you can't identify where that tube or it's damage is located you can always cut it in a place you see and pull a new tube right back to the boot wall where you can re connect the new tube to the existing one....shouldn't be too difficult, I guess.
