Just bought my first Skoda

Morning all

Now the proud owner of 07 Octavia Estate 1.9 DTI PD - unfortunatley haven't had insurance docs through so can't tax it until Monday grrrr.

Couple of questions though ( well three actually)

  • It's done 46000 miles and is on variable servicing. I do about 10000 miles a year, 4K on long runs, the rest mostly urban and under 10 mile trips. The car was last serviced at 37,000 in April 09 and it's next service is scheduled to be sometime next April. Would I be better switching to annual servicing? I 've always had intermediate oil changes every six months on my Zafira as it only cost £20 to do, but as Skoda use the long life stuff at over twice the price - is a frequent oil change still necessary?
  • Is it OK to use French Supermaket Diesel in these engines or should I be sticking to Shell / Total etc.
  • Despite coming from a main dealer, the sales guy said he could only offer a three month warranty as he's already knocked a substantial amount off the screen price. I've been looking on the Skoda website that states approved used Skoda all come with a 12 month warranty as standard. I've never had much faith in warranties, being of the belief that if it's likely to fail then it won't be covered. However, modern cars, particularly diesels are so complex these days I'd hate to face a massive bill from a failure that could have been covered. I'll take this up with the dealer this week anyway, but does a Skoda used warranty cover things like Injectors, DMFs, Turbos and other hideously expensive bits?

Thanks :)

Welcome to Briskoda.

My parents run a 2008 octavia ambiente 1.9pd105, and cover 15-18k per year, they have kept their car on variable servicing due to the type of journeys they do in it and spend nearly 2months per year in France in it. Knowing them the majority of the time their car will be run on supermarket fuel and they've not had any trouble what so ever.

In your shoes I would take it off variable servicing and put it on fixed & I would try different fuels to see what your car runs best on as all engines are different, should you still be concerned about running on supermarket fuel you could always use Millers Power Sport 4 fuel adative.

I ran an modded mk1 octavia 1.9pd130 on fixed servicing from when I bought the car at 80k even though I was doing nearly 20k per year and also ran it on Asda fuel with Millers Power Sport 4, I sold the car at 130k and the engine was still going strong and perfectly reliable.

I have just bought a 2l pd140 and will be doing the same once I reach 60k, I will be putting it on fixed servicing for my own piece of mind.

There's no real point in using variable service at 10_000 miles a year, but be prepared to have to explain this to a garage!

I don't use supermarket fuel, and never have. I've also never had any of the common sooting up, rough running or low power problems.

I always fill at the cheapest station , supermarket or not. Never ever had any differences or problems....

In the UK I fill up at Shell, virtually exclusively. I have run several tanks of French supermarket diesel with no noticeable drop in performance or economy.
