I've started to use this function although it still seems to be beta. It seems to do the job but I did have an inconsistent to and from journey yesterday over a 12-15 mile route but its not let me down. However I've never used a dedicated satnav before, not even a tomtom. So how does it compare for those of you who've used both?

I'm also struggling to install the text to speech software (speechsynthesis data installer on Android market) but I'm assuming thats a phone problem on my part.

Can't say I can really comment as I haven't used it yet as I have sat nav software installed on my phone. (Sygic mobile maps fyi).

Had a look at it once though and plotted a route in just to see what it was like but didn't actually use it.

What problems are you having at installing the text to speech stuff? What is it doing or not doing?

You may find theres a "text to speech" menu buried in your settings menu... theres a button in there to get it to get the bits it needs.

I tried the google nav for the first time yesterday.. i know im in a small rollerskate car, but it tried to send me down a cycle route (admittedly that could be partly my fault, coming off a jct early and then starting the nav)

Also the interaction with the rest of the phone sucks.. i got a phonecall and the satnav was still shouting down my ear while on the call...

Ill probably give google a few more goes.. i see co-pilot is available on the market.. i bought that for the piephone and it was very good for just 20-odd quid for the UK maps.

TTS seems to be software issue. The app won't download from market, it just hangs.

I normally check my routes beforehand so it hasn't caught me out. Was wondering what veteran sat-navers thought of it.

Sounds like they have some bugs to iron out. Even the Sygic maps that I am using manages to mute the sat nav while in a call.

And yes Copilot is a good price. It's only £50 odd for full europe maps.

That's ood. have you rebooted at all? Maybe try clearing the market cache too? (Settings> Applications> Manage Applications> Market> Clear Cache)

It has now decided it will download the TTS (Text-to-Speech) software and got it to work. I tried it out this morning and I have muted the annoying bitch. She's worse than having the wife in the car.

Then dont go near a Ford with in-built sat nav!

Mine does nothing but moan at me.

This has just reminded me of yesterday. I was installing Ovi maps on a friends nokia and when I saw that the Female voice file was larger than the male one I said the woman must talk more! lol

I have a german voice on my sat-nav and the only annoying this is how she says "Yards"... imagine putting on a really bad Gloucestershire accent and thats how it sounds!

The feature in Google maps that allows you to de-couple from software controlled route making in GPS by tracing your own route on a satellite map and then downloading the file to your GPS has been taken a stage further by these guys:-

It has done this to me again, sending me to work via one M-way junction and home via another. Very strange.

Could be it's either shorter time wise or distance.

The Ford system does similar on me. Seems that 1 sec shorter makes all the diff :dull:
