My car is set to variable servicing even though I don't put a lot of mileage on it, but I bring it in for service once a year, before the winter. I like having the oil condition monitoring in the engine working in the background in case something does happen the oil though...

How can I make sure the variable service interval has not been reset to fixed throughout the lifetime of my car? my new car is a 2007 Octavia with QG1 service intervals and it is due to be serviced in 1700 km. Is this just a dumb counter going down or is it the actual oil monitoring system working?

That is an impressive thread revival!

If the car has been set to fixed at any time in its history then that can only be a good thing as it means it had fresh oil more frequently.

QG1 is the variable / longlife interval designed for cars covering higher annual mileage, or for leet buyers looking to minimise running costs over their usual three year ownership. Anyone planning to keep a car long-term is better off ensuring the car gets fresh oil at least once a year. Engine oil is the lifeblood of any engine and turbo.

What is your annual mileage? If it is around 10,000 km's or less you'll be better on fixed intervals as this will see a prompt for a service roughly once a year.

If you are on QG1 and have 1,700 km's left to the next service then I'd be getting it serviced and changing it back to fixed.
