Well after having the car(Mk1 vRS Octy) less than 2 weeks, I'm after puttin 2l of oil into her and I aint even driving her on or doing major mileage. Now i know that ain't right! Was talkin to a few lads and they said it's ether the Piston rings, or turbo seals. There is a bit of "blow by" coming from the oil cap when i took it off when i started her cold, so thats why i'm thinking it's the rings. I have an idea that when I do an oil change on her tomorrow, if it is the piston rings, there will be petrol in the oil that comes out of the sump(if i'm right on that). What I want to know is, how do I check the seals on the turbo? As in, what do I look for when I'm lookin at it?

Again, any help is greatly appreciated! :thumbup:

If your turbo seals are going you should see smoke as the oil will be pouring into the exhaust I think.

Well the other day i was in traffic, and i noticed that she threw a couple of puffs of whiteish smoke out the exhaust. would i be better off tryin to spoy it when she's running?

Would be blue... White is standard if it was 5 degrees or less mine does that.

Going from Clive's car you wouldn't miss it, also check for black spots of crap on the bumper around the exhaust.

I hope it's the turbo and not the rings.

you and me both lad! If its the rings, I'm screwed! :'( Any ideas on the price for a new set of rings? I was told to get a compression test done on the engine. Would that show anything?

Yep, thats exactly what you should do mate :thumbup:

Take all the spark plugs out and check each cylinder, they should all be about the same compression.

If you find one noticeably lower pour some oil into that cylinder and try again.

If the compression is up it is your rings/cylinder, if it is lower it could possibly be a valve.

Going from memory, I'm sure someone else can tell you exactly how to do it :thumbup:

Oh, and unplug your injectors :thumbup:

Ya thats what i was told to do alright. Gona send her to a main dealer to get a test done i'd say. Be worth payin the few bob just to know the job was done right.

It's not hard to do, and the compression tester is cheap enough to buy at around £15-20-ish.

Though a main dealer should be able to tell you exactly what you need to know.

go buy a compression tester £15 from srewfix

remove plugs and disconnect injectors then 1 by one screw in compression tester. turn car over a few time anything over 150 is considerd okay on this engine just done mine and where all around 170.

if one is low then you need to put some oil in. if the reading then goes up its the rings if it does the same then its prob valve stem seals

if it was the turbo you will get alot of smoke stand behind car and get someone to rev it up if lots of blue oily smoke the turbo seals are gone

from going through this the last few weeks and speaking to some specalist i would put my money on the turbo seals gone as most have not seen ring failure on the 1.8 engine :thumbup:

do the tests yourself it takes about 30mins and will save you some dollar to go towards new turbo :thumbup: :thumbup:

also worth checking the pcv valve as this might be fecked this will cause smoking and oil usage prob not to the level you say but might be worth a punt.

blow through it if you can both ways then its knackerd ( little black circle next to the dumpvalve )

or poss blocked breather system wich would link in with the pcv

I take it you've checked you haven't got any leaks coming from under the car?

Where did the car come from? Private sale or a dealer/garage?

They can also leak oil out of the filter / oil cooler housing and out the back of the cam cover and down the back of the block if the cam cover gasket has failed. But these are usually slow leaks, if you're putting 2 litres in its probably burning it :(

I've seen the results of blown turbo seals - a literal smoke screen (white to the eye, not blue) and oil consumption about 1 litre per mile. Oh and the smoke will smell like warm engine oil; rings or stem seals tend to smell more like engine exhaust only more so.

So have I and it was definitely blue :giggle:

:wait: Mine failed :'( I had a full engine rebuild inc a new turbo last year :doh:

Sorry lads. Been up the walls over the past few weeks. Well i got the timing belt and water pump done, and while it was with the mechanic, i got him to do an intake system leak check and nothing turned up. He changed the oil again, and i was told to watch it over the next few days. :(

your mad why would you do the timing belt when there is something major wrong wth the car waist of money

if its burning oil like you said its either the rings or the turbo........so why o why would you get the other bits done when they will prob have to be stripped soon anyhow????

Cause with the timing belt only having another 500 miles or so, and me with no job, I had to get it done, or else park the car till i can afford the work.

I fried the rings on the first engine I had in my Suzuki. I kept ragging the nuts off it until I finally had enough of it dropping down to 2 or 3 cylinders, and me having to pull over to remove and clean the spark plugs to get it running on all 4 cylinders again!

It used ALOT of oil. I had to top it up every day.

Like everyone has said, it's a piece of **** to check the rings, so crack on and do it!

The cambelt change seems a bit random!

Naw it was due a change anyway. And the water pump was just starting to leak as well so i guess it was best i got em changed now. Dont mind paying the extra few bob.

The mechanic said that its probably the valves as she puffs smoke coming off the throttle. The way i see it, if i'm doin the valves, i might as well go the whole hog. Full top end rebuild and rings gor a grand even. Good price? Thats all original skoda parts, vat and labour inc. Thinkin of treatin myself to an early christmas pressent early ya know? :p

Just got the engine rebuilt. Solid as a rock i hope, and so far nearly 700 miles and not a drop of oil burnt!

Should i change the oil and filter? Someone was telling me to do it around now and around 1200 miles after the rebuild.

Also, how should i be driving her? Nice and easy or open her up often?
