What to use on a new care

Featured Replies

I have ordered a new Octavia vRS its due in 11 weeks, any recomendations how to polish the car outside and how to care for the seats etc. I have seen "Greased Lightning" on Ideal World and wondered if anybody had views on it.

Follow these instructions and you won’t go far wrong:

1. Pressure wash and Snow Foam the car if you have one

2. Wash the car normally with preferred Car Wash

3. Dry the car

(If you want to polish the car at this stage, OK but it probably won’t be needed if the paint is good already..Your call, but wash it again afterwards if you do..I use AG SRP)

4. Apply Poorboys Black Hole to the whole car, buff off and apply again..2 coats

5. Wipe the whole car with a wet cloth and dry again*

6. Apply Poorboys EX-P to the whole car, buff off and apply again and then again..(3X is even better)

Might seem excessive, but it makes it shine more.

7. Leave for at least an hour to cure

8. Damp cloth the whole car, to remove dust and aid the curing*

9. Apply Collinite 915 to a panel at a time until it hazes, apply sparingly....

10. Leave an hour

11. Damp cloth the car again*

12. Apply second and last coat of Collinite 915

13. Apply Poorboys EX- P sealant to wheels or Poorboys Wheel Seal..Buff off immediately..2 coats if you’re not knackered by now

With the acid fall out from Iceland I would contemplate claying the car with a mild clay after step 3. If you do wash and dry again before applying AG SRP.

What colour vrs are you getting

In the time it takes to put 7 coats of various products on you'd get a much better result machine polishing and applying two coats of a wax. ;)

It all depends on how much effort you want to put in, do you want to re wax it every month or every 3months say,do you want a really deep gloss or do want to protect your paint.as for the seats get some supaguard fabric protector off eBay or just use a good quality shoe protector spray. I'm in redcar too and have a black vrs ,I've got a few good products at home and snow foam if you want to see that in action before you buy a lance

Sorry...Youre wrong.

If protected in the manner described and with these products, or similar, the car will be much easier to wash and will attract less dirt/contaminents

Wax is only a process, it should never be 'stand alone'

I understand your ideas there buddy but its very rare to find a pro who uses so many products on a customers car, you just end up taking layers off to a certain point, I do maintain a good polish well worked is worth more than any wax or sealant. In fact in my years of detailing your the only one who feels a wax should'nt be used on its own!

Thanks guys, Seems i got a lot to think about, may take you up on your offer "furn" and pop round and see what snow foam n a lance r like. I havent got anything at the mo not even a jet washer so starting from scratch . Car isnt due for 10/11 weeks so no real rush.

But nobody answered the question about "Greased Lightning" off ideal world!!!!!!

Products get better..ideas change...at the end of the day, its all about choice and product experience.

Like you., I used wax as a stand alone treatment..with good results, but as I learnt more and different products became available, Ive changed my own regime and hence advice

If you look at what 'Baker21' does, he uses polishes and sealers and all in one' (Zaino products)

Recently Ive discovered Poorboys, prior to that Bilt Hamber Autobalm and Collinite 915 as a topper.

I guess something will come along eventually to change my regime again...We shall see

Over in Civinfo.com, a few guys have used it and rate it.

Personally, I find it hard to get my head around using waterless cleaning products.

I would leave the greased lightning alone, how much effort do you want to put in to your car do you want to wax it quarterly and just wash it weekly and top up the finish, or are you prepared to wax it more regularly. We can help you decide on the right products, then. But bear in mind detailing is very faddy and there is so much out there its confusing. A friend of mine just bought a new black Hyundai 4x4, I recommended the car lack twins followed by collinite 476, this give him a really deep shine and awesome durability . He was astounded at the finish and still have a running joke going (3months later), at the level of beeding.

I think that's mainly because no-one has heard of it..................

Agree with Chris on this one, the waterless system does have it's place in the market but there are better methods available if you can put more effort into the detailing time...........

halfords have a 3 for 2 on car cleaning equipment at the moment, you could pick up quite a bit of kit you need now and save some money.

Maybe worth noting if you need easy to find stuff and microfibres etc Asda have a 2 for £5 on car care. Obviously they don't have anything specialised but I picked up a couple of things the other day.
