Puppy timelapse

Featured Replies

After fiddling about with a bit with proper timelapse style photography I'm trying to do something similar with my puppy pictures as he's gone from a tiny mainly white little baby to a much darker full formed spaniel in what seems like a very short space of time. This is my first attempt which is all my landscape pictures (and a few portrait ones that have snuck in) put together in quick succession:

I realise there's some obvious problems which are mainly with the pictures moving far too fast and no synchonisation to the music although I'm still quite pleased with it, while it completely comes apart when there's too many dissimilar shots there's quite a few sections where just a handful of shots together is enough to flow through. It's just chance that I happened to be trying to capture him running which I think is a good way to finish it at this sort of speed. I'm hoping to work on another version this week with a variable rate of pictures that are generally slower and stitch in some very brief video clips to keep the feel from the faster burst shots. Anyway thought it may be of interest or amusement here.

Wow, loads of cute puppy photos.

It kinda makes my head hurt to watch though!

So you'd think but the mucky little beggar still manages:

He's lucky he wasn't with me this time otherwise I don't think I'd have let him back in the car!

Thats pritty cool I like it

Very Artisticly done and quite trippy :giggle:

That is very VERY cool!..

how did you do it? was it a manual process of choosing the similar pics to bunch together?

Thanks! The process was entirely automated as the pictures were simply sorted by date then simply assembled on after another, there are a few slip-ups due to some of the cameras being on day out from each on their internal clocks (no idea how that happened) but it's mostly not noticeable.. When I was initially taking photos of the pup I'd tend to have to take four or five in a row each time as he was frequently moving and difficult to capture which works in my favour for the video, as he got older I tended to be more likely to be taking just single shots as I could get what I wanted first time which clearly causes problems in the video as flicks too fast with nothing really linking the frames.

I've been working on a second version here:

This time the speed of the photos is dropped from ten to five per second which cuts the number of photos from 2260 to around 1100, I've mainly culled pictures which were the wrong orientation (shouldn't have been there in the first place, pain in the neck that some camera can't rotate without an IS lens fitted) and also those that were out of focus or had Alfie moving outwith the frame. To make up for the lack of burst sequences I've intersected small video clips. As is probably fairly obvious I'm not a creative person so I'm not sure about the result plus the 5fps still seems pretty fast even though I think it goes better with the music.

Love the signature image by the way!

I need a puppy....so I can try this! haha! I love it :) maybe a little bit too fast, but it needs to be else the freaky growing up effect wouldn't work, and it needs to be fast and choppy to work, so it makes it look like video in parts.

He runs down the patio a lot doesn't he? hehe! What did you use to make it the, when you say you just put it all in and it sorted it into time order?

Loz - have you tried the second video? It's at half the speed and most of the burst mode shots are gone and replaced by video sequences instead. As is probably evident I was doing a lot of C-AF/burst speed testing hence the numerous runs of Alfie out the back. This is the sequence I used to produce the video although it's more complex than needed as there's five different cameras used each with different aspect ratios and naming systems, if you've just one camera it may be easier:

1 - Collected all the photos together into one large folder and sorted them by date

2 - Dragged them into Irfanview's batch rename which keeps the windows sort order

3 - Ran the bulk rename to rename the photos to 0001.jpg through to 2600.jpg or whatever

4 - Ran a bulk resize on these photos to reduce the height to 1080

5 - Removed all the portrait shots (although I missed some), then sorted by 4:3, 3:2 and 16:9

6 - Automatically cropped all the photos down to the same 4:3 resolution for ease as a lot of them were 4:3

7 - Started up Virtualdub and told it to open the first picture 0001.jpg which automatically sequences every sequential photo into a video, left the rate at 10 per second

8 - Saved from virtualdub as a standard avi and imported it into Vegas and added the music and titles

The second version was much the same aside from choosing 40 photos for the intro and sequenced them in Virtualdub at 2 frames per second then cut down the rest from 2260 to 1100 and sequenced them at 5 fps. Then put it all into Vegas and cut some sections from video taken by the cameras and overlayed them

I prefer it without the video tbh as it makes it more...well, odd! and thats sorta how its meant to be I guess?

Loz - try http://www.cairn-rescue.co.uk/ - often a lot of young dogs looking for a second loving home - these ones can be a bit tricky , but the effort of a loving Cairn is worth it . They can be headstrong and fiesty - like my nine year old pup, who loves to spend time loving the wife ,or cuddling up on my knee .( when he's not terrorising Rotties)- but as Paul O'Grady found out - little smashers .

Great video, loved it :

Must get some pix of our border taz when I can :)
