Temp Light came on....then gone again?

Featured Replies

Got in the car the morning, started as normal and it had been on for around 1 min when the red temp warning light came on? ( THIS ONE )

I turned the car off and checked all the levels, everything looks fine. I started the car again and it had gone? I didn't want to drive it to work in case it was something serious ( don't fancy being broke down on the M6 in rush hour! ) so didn't have chance to leave it running very long.

Anyone have any ideas what it could be? I'm going to take it out later when i get in for a run and see if it comes on again, I'm about to put it up for sale so i could really do with it just being some random......blip lol

It sounds to me like a faulty coolant level sensor.i had the same problem in winter but i cleaned the metal probes of the sensor(located in coolant reservoir) & its never come back on since.try cleaning the sensor first,sometimes topping the coolant up a bit puts the light out too. the sensor comes as part of the reservoir.

It's a bit warm for it (it's more likely with temperatures below 5C and a car that's been sitting overnight), but I suspect the usual "low coolant / overheat" false positive.

For a usually reasonably permanent fix, open the coolant bottle, and rub the 2 metal prongs with a screwdriver. You "should" replace the coolant bottle, but if you're selling the car why spend £15?

Thanks guys, it would make sense as it needed a new oil cooler last year some time and there was a little oil in the water. I never ended up replacing the bottle!

I thought the coolant sensor error brought on a orange light, rather than a red light?

Orange = level low

Red = <bail out of the car before it blows>....

There again I could easily be wrong :-)

Thanks lads, have sorted it last night.

Sensor was covered in crap, cleaned it off and all is ok again.
