Tyre Pressure monitor light

Featured Replies

Found the tyre pressure warning light on today.

Immediately checked the tyre pressures. All spot on..no loss of pressure.

So I pressed 'reset.' and it went off

So...Why did it come on?

Has yours done this?

Mine works i have a slow puncture in rear nearside loses about 10 psi every 3-4 day and the light does come on when it drops, to look at the wheel it looks fine but when put airline on it has dropped

AFAIK the wheels dont have actual pressure sensors it just monitors the wheel circumference via the abs sensor or something to make sure they are ok

I've found mine to be quite sensitive and will go off with only a couple of psi difference on one tyre.

Is your gauge sensitive enough?

The "tyre pressure monitor" mentioned does not monitor pressure !

It works from the brake system ABS which senses when any wheel is rotating faster than the others because the rolling radius is smaller i.e. the wheel tyre is flat or has reduced pressure which reduces the rolling radius

VAG has continually mis-described this feature on some models. On the golf MK 6 it is called the "Flat Tyre Indicator" .

There is a proper pressure indicating feature option which displays actual tyre pressure on dash display but this is only available on the top of the range VAG models ( each tyre valve sensor spare part cost about £70 each ! )

Mines done it before Chris, pulled over on the MW to find absolutely nothing wrong. Cancelled it and carried on. Odd indeed.

I has happened to me aswell.

Light went on, checked pressures, nothing wrong, cancelled and carried on.

Nice to know it works though. :D

So a false positive is working? I've had this happen a few times now, and if it keeps happening and I check and find there's nothing wrong there is a chance the one time it's right will be the time I can't be bothered to check all the pressures... Boy that cried wolf anyone?

Me too

I've had this usually when I have swapped front and back tyres round.

But it works well.

I had a slow puncture and it warned me whenever I lost more than 4psi

Yes, I also once got a puncture and "PING" went the warning. I most enjoyed changing a tyre in a car park on the way drop SEMBO off at work :dull:

Happened to me too.

Was on the phone to my boss at the time (handsfree of course), and he thought there was something properly wrong when I went "oh ****, that's not good. Gotta go!"

And me once in 8000 miles on motorway..... didn't even know i tyre pressure monitoring!

Mine went off once with the caravan on. Stopped and the pressures were fine.

Come to think of it I am constantly raising (and lowering) the pressure in the rear tyres for towing. I've never reset it apart from during the above incident.. Should it notice? Maybe I should be resetting it after each pressure change. Food for thought.

I think it's relative, so as long as the pressures are the same on that axle then it doesn't much matter if you keep adjusting them up/down.

I've gotten it to come on just with too much wheel spinning antics before now. No really.

Thanks for putting my mind at rest guys.

I did just drive to Fort William and back with no problems

Although when I did read the pressures, they were all 36 psi.

Too high I believe

Full explanation of how it works

Indirect

Indirect TPMS do not use physical pressure sensors. Indirect TPMS measure the "apparent" air pressure, by monitoring individual wheel rotational speeds, and other signals available outside the tire itself. Most indirect TPMS use the fact that an under-inflated tire has a slightly smaller diameter than a correctly inflated tire and therefore has to rotate at a higher angular velocity to cover the same distance as a correctly inflated tire. Newer developments of indirect TPMS can also detect simultaneous under-inflation in up to all four tires using vibration analysis of individual wheels or analysis of load shift effects during acceleration and/or cornering, which can be realized in software using advanced signal processing techniques. However, the vibration analysis technique requires the use of additional suspension sensors which result in increased complexity and cost of the overall system as long as vertical chassis movements are concerned. That is why most current advanced indirect systems use the spectral content of the wheel speed sensor signals so no additional sensors are needed and the computations can also be carried out by usual processors for example in usual ABS or ESC control units.

Indirect TPMS are realized in software in combination with wheel-speed sensors for anti-lock braking systems, and electronic stability control systems. A disadvantage of indirect TPMS is that the driver must calibrate the system by pushing a reset button on the dashboard via an on-board computer and if this is performed when any tire is in an under inflated condition

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I've had exactly the same problem today. Driving normally, tyre pressure warning sounded and light came on. Stopped, put a little air into all the tyres, started engine but light still on. So how do I "reset" so the warning light goes off? (I've looked in the handbook but can't find any reference to a "reset" procedure.

Thanks.

Sorry, have now RTFM...............properly !

You just hold the trye sensor button in for a couple of seconds. The button is on the centre console under air con controls.
