Faulty Climate Control

Can anyone offer any advice?

The air con on my 2.5 diesel auto Superb (06 model) has stopped working, giving out only ambient cooling. I have had everything obvious checked by my local service guy, and he says he believes it is a failed switch in the heater box (?) which could be very expensive to access and repair/replace.

Can anyone shine any light on this problem and give me some ideas as to where I can go to get the problem solved in the Liverpool/Manchester area and avoid the dreaded main dealer?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi

Have you had the gas checked ? as if there is no gas (or little amount) in the system the switch won't work as such, as it is is a pressure switch .

So get that checked, and if it has got gas in then it might be the switch, but if there is no gas, before you just re-gas possibility its due to a leak

and wants rectifying first.

I hear Halfords are offering a free pressure test for A/C. May be of some use to you buddy.

Thanks for that guys.

I did get the gas checked by my local garage who suspected it might be a leak, but they could find no evidence of a leak throughout the system. They have re-gassed it and suggested that it is likely to be the switch that is faulty and recommended I either take it back to my main dealer or find an air-con specialist. I just wondered if anyone had any experience of such a fault where it was the switch and the possible cost to rectify.

The system will display its own faults and settings, including MPH!!!!!! just cant find the info on this 'puter at the moment maybe somebody else on here has it?? Philip

Just found one link here http://www.passatworld.com/forums/showthread.php?t=92981

That looks like it could be very useful, if I can find an air-con specialist maybe should help to identify the problem!

Thanks for that

It should give a fault code if the unit is broken iirc, I assume you mean it's not cooling the air? does the engine note change slightly when you switch it on, and can you switch between eco/auto and nothing modes on the display, also can you hear the motor flaps working when you adjust the direction settings, if you don't hear anything it could be the compressor is broken, it still could be the switch, but the only way to tell is to replace the unit, if you have to do this, look on Google for VW spares and you should find a S/H one, that of borrow one from another car if you know someone, I think a Passat and some Seat's have the same units only in different colour illumination, but they should still be suitable for testing purposes.

Check the fan on the radiator under the bonnet this fan should be running at high speed with aircon on common fault passat 05 onwards fits most times

Unlike climate control problems reported so far, mine (a fabia combi 1.9 tdi) sometimes blasts out hot air, when on the coldest setting, with aircon switched on. The only solution I have found is to stop and switch off ignition for a moment, then start up again - very annoying though.

Faulty temp flap motor, better off in the right section but its a common issue.

(and yours isnt climate control, climatic is only semi active).
