Changing over to Xenon Lights

Featured Replies

Hi my new 10 plate octavia has normal headlights but if i wanted to pick up a set of xenon headlights would it be a simple case of replace one set for the new xenons or does it involve altering relays and wiring and the light switch as well????? :wonder:

It involves installing headlight washers and sensors to detect the suspension tilt angle to automatically level the lights as well as some coding on the car ECU AFAIK. That would be for the 100% definitely road legal version. Anything short of this may or may not be legal, but thanks to the Octy using projector rather than reflector headlamps, HID bulbs can drop in to replace standard bulbs without affecting how cleanly the beam is defined, so people are passing MOT's with aftermarket HID bulbs.

You cant just drop in HID bulbs as the vehicle electrics won't start them.

You can get HID kits which include ballasts and load converters to get around the bulb failure warning system.

I run a 50w HID kit from HIDS-Direct ( 50w is twice as bright as ordinary 35w xenon ) I have never been flashed and my car passed it's MOT with them in

It cost me £74.99 delivered

Is there an install guide anywhere with pics?? and how long do the bulbs last and the price of replacements should the go

I didn't do an install guide as to be honest it doesn't need one it's a case of following the Instructions in the box which are very straight forwards and easy to follow. Plus it all fits inside the large plastic housing on the back of the headlight.

The kit is guaranteed for 2 years ( not sure if that's bulbs aswell ) and last time I looked it was around £30 for a set of replacement bulbs.

What is the colour temperature of the Xenon bulb supplied in a factory fit Xenon headlight? Is it 5000k or 6000k?

Also, what colour temperature have most went for? I quite fancy a set for my car.

ou got the Golf ones i take it? 4300K or 5000K or 6000K? (i assume no higher as they are 'pull me' signs).

To be fair if you wanted them, then you probably should have paid the £500 for the option.

I tried a set in the Octy II with projectors and I was blinding people, despite two MOT centres saying spot on.

You take your own risks, just be aware of the implications that it could potentially have for your insurance etc and factor that in too.

Yes that's the kit I got in 6000k colour.

You might think that's too blue but due to the brightness they don't look as bad as you think. They are a spot on match colour wise ( to the eye ) to a mates BMW they are just a lot brighter.

I think you can only get that kit in 5000 or 6000k but I would recommend the 6000k ones.

To give you an idea of what they look like

Carl

They look great a real nice colour!

Do you know if they fit the FL headlights?

Many Thanks

BIG Nick :)

Since putting in the HID kit, I've never once been flashed by an oncoming car. However, as soon as I installed it, I had the beams aligned. Because of the shape of the bulbs, the beam alignment will be different from when standard halogens are in.

Regrets about fitting an HID kit? None whatsoever!

Mike

Just saying the issues I had as I was blinding people on sweeping country roads.

All well and good saying it's fine on m/ways etc but I drive through the forest too much (it was why I tried them) and even after alignment checks I blind people.

If you wanted to try a cheaper option first, try some of the +50% bulbs, like osram silverstar in the headlights dipped beam and see if that helps you out.

I'm not saying you didn't have issues cheeze as I know you did.

I often drive through country roads, dark forests etc and I haven't ever been flashed.

I even live at the top of a ruddy great hill and coming up that I never get flashed by oncoming traffic.

@Big Nick. They will work in FL headlights as someone else I advised got a set. I can't for the life of me think who it was though.

The only bulbs that I have ever found that have made a difference from standard has been PIAA extreme white plus bulbs - normal 55W H7 bulb, produces 110W of measured output. Iv tried ring (halfords extreme brilliance), osram nightbreakers and phillips +80% bulbs and none of them except the PIAA were really any good. For the best HID kits go to www.hids4u.co.uk and have a look at the pro-max 55W kit - these are a bit more expensive than most conversions but the bulbs are available with "anti glare" coating on them if you want it and that will stop you getting those annoying flashes off people! But otherwise as long as you can see where you're going....

Vtec hids4u don't make the best kits.

My 35w kit was from them and yes it is very well made but the quality is no different from the 50w kit I got from hids-direct at half the price.

I still have my 35w kit as a back up incase the 50w kit does go but I have bee running it for about 7 months now with no issues at all and I drive with my lights on constantly.

With regards to the antiglare bulbs. They are for reflector headlights not projector ones and they don't work. A couple of my friends tried them in there cars and all you get is a visible black line in the beam pattern. The light still gets distorted all over the place in reflector headlights

Hmmm... They were very good in my 5 Series I have to say, which was a 55 plate so only had reflector lenses for the headlights - I had the 35w ultimate kit 5000k and it was brilliant, no glare or anything! I have no idea on the other kit you were recommending it might be great i was just recommending a kit iv tried twice before and had no issues with :) after all 99% of the time you get what you pay for

I'm not knocking the hids4u kit as I have had one. They just are expensive compared to the hids direct which are the same quality.

The newer version of the hids4u kit doesn't fit in the plastic behind the lights either as I tried the new and the old before taking the last of the old style kits, trying it for a few days then having to take it out.

Out of interest Carl, does your new 50W kit fit in the plastic behind the light where the OEM ballasts would fit and if so which kit did you go for and was it a premium or slim kit.

This was the kit I went for 50w Xenon Kit

It does fit inside the plastic headlight cover just. With a little modification to the inside of the cover.

The company are in Manchester as well so not too far if you want to travel to them. I ordered mine though and got it the next day and even when the first kit I got had one light kept flickering they sent me another kit the next day without waiting for the first one to be returned. So their customer care gets an A+ in my book.

Just ordered a set. Went for the 6000k Colour temperature.

Since you already have projectors that's going to be very blue.

If you get the chance I'd ask them to change to 4'300K or 5000K lamps.

I think I'd agree with this, I have the 6000k hids-direct fitted and although they look the business I often wonder if I should have gone more OEM (4300/5000k) as they can attract a bit of attention from people as they are a little on the blue side of white.

Ive been running these for nearly 12 months now and have had no issues with distracting fellow motorists or the kit, fitting is easy on the Octy as you can remove the headlight units from the car for fitting, I fitted the same to an E-class Merc and it was a bit of a struggle I can tell you due to poor access.

I was told by hids-direct that fitting the ballasts in the clear plastic boxes on the rear of the headlight unit was'nt such a good idea as the heat generated by the ballasts could cause them to overheat if enclosed and so have fitted mine to the rear of these boxes using 3M'S VHB double sided tape just to be on the safe side.

I don't find mine to be too blue. They are definately less blue than the 35w kit I had but that may be due to the increased brightness.

I had a H7R 6000k set on my Ibiza before and they were pretty white. They were just standard reflective headlights though. Will be different on the projectors.

Are the OEM Xenons around the 5000k mark then?

Im looking for places to mount the Ballasts tonight. Might just attatch to the back of the headlight unit with double sided tape. Does look a queeze for space for fitting though.

OEM is 4k3 and while you can get away with the 5K behind the projectors, the 6K is heading into blue, so add the refraction in the projector and you're going to get pretty blue.
