NGK or Denso, Platinum or Iridium?

Featured Replies

Hi all, well it's getting near time to change the plugs, so having searched the forum, my question is; which do you rate?

NGK or Denso? Platinum or Iridium?

My vRS is slightly modified ;) so what do you reckon? Also is there a recommended torque setting for plugs? All I've seen so far in "don't do them too tight".

Cheers all.

To be honest mate there is not great difference in quality between Denso and NGK but the Iridium plugs are always the best

Recommended tightening torque for 14mm flat seat plug is 25-30 Nm.

NGK's standard OEM replacement plug for the vRS is a PFR7S8EG which is a double platinum plug with a copper cored ground electrode for better heat dissipation. The compatible iridium plug is BKR7EIX, this has the iridium centre electrode but a standard ground electrode without a copper core. So although the centre electrode is iridium the rest of the plug isn't really an upgrade to the OEM.

I would recommend NGK but then I might be a bit biased! ;)

they all good plugs. id bet you wouldnt notice nay difference between them, so id say go for the cheapest option

Cheers all, I'll certainly be shopping around

I couldn't believe the price i was quoted by a dealer the other day, £80+ Vat for plugs alone!

I will do another check on the NGK part numbers though, as I came up with "PFR6Q for BWA engine Turbo RS FSI 01/06 ->", not PFR7S8EG

PFR6Q is the plug for the 1.8T engine for the Mk1 vRS, the entry on the NGK UK webiste is currently incorrect and due to be updated soon. If you look at the NGK Germany site the correct plug (PFR7S8EG) is listed:

http://www.ngk.de/index.php?id=659&pd=660&t=pkwzuendkerzen&lmf=SKODA&h=SKODA&m=Octavia

You should be able to pick up a set of PFR7S8EG for under £40. Try Opie Oils, they sell the plugs and have a link from this site.

Aaaahhhhh! Much clearer, thank you! Good job the NGK UK site has a "disclaimer" about it's accuracy!!!!
