Smashed Tailgate Glass

Featured Replies

Hi,

Did a quick search and nothing found. So it seems as if I'm the first to have the rear glass smashed into a trillion tiny pieces.

How did it happen?, a stone thrown up by a passing vehicle (tractor) hit the back glass ( Yeti was parked)

Broken Glass

Now awaiting news from Autoglass.

I hope won't mean it's off the road for too long, but I doubt if they have much of this kind of thing in stock.

Hi Graham,

emoticon-0106-crying.gif to hear your Monsters in the wars again; think you had damage to the front screen too earlier in the year emoticon-0101-sadsmile.gif Hope they can source a glass quickly for you.

SMOC Monsters appear to have a fetish for glass replacement / repair; think thats about 6 or 7 new pieces of glass between us this year. Must be something design emoticon-0112-wondering.gif

Regards,

Indeed! a kinda freak accident.

Irony is I had just arranged for the Yeti to go into the garage next week to have the towbar electrics sorted - since the original fitter put in the wrong 7pin socket rather than the skoda 13 pin socket.

Now I have to get the glass fixed and then get back to the towbar ....

Thanks for the kind comments.

Graham

Was it a hot day?

Looking at the picture, it looks to me like the edges have shattered as well as the centre.

That then suggests that the windscreen was a very tight fit, expanded to a point where the screen pressed the metal around it, caused enough pressure to smash it in the middle and the edges break at the same time.

I don't think it's a clean stone or something, purely because of the edge damage.

Hi,

Interesting thought. If you look to the left of the rear wiper you can see the lower half of the impact of the stone, in fact on close inspection (not inthe photo) the metal work is slightly (very) deformed here where it asorbed the impact aftet the glass shattered. The whole glass shattered into 2mm size pieces. My view on the edges is that as these are not held in place - that as the glas breaks they fall away.

Awaiting a call from autoglass...... fingers crossed

Oh no! I've had a similar parked experience in the A2 outside my previous house. By the time the neighbours' called me and I got to the car it was still making ticking noises as the glass shatteres for minutes on end! On the A2 the glass also comes complete with a new spoiler since that is bonded to the glass!

Word of warning though: make sure they get ALL the glass out of the inside of the boot - once the trim is off. I had some glass sealed in there impossible to reach and you sometimes still hear them rattle away when you open or shut the boot. Tell them you will bring it back if there is any glass left, so they better do a decent job the first time.

Remember this happening to my mothers Morris Marina in the mid 70's but to the front screen emoticon-0104-surprised.gif (before laminated screens became standard) while she was taking us out for the day. Had to punch a hole in the screen so she could see to drive home; no mobile fitters back then.

Moriss Marina - ah my first car! in "Damask Red" ..... I'm sure I put more oil in it than I did fuel, but as a student it kept me going till eventualy there was more rust than metal.

As for the A2 glass shattering - yes that is exactly how it is ....ding,ding and no matter how many times you sweep up there still more on the floor.

Good tip on the glass in the boot will look out for that....!

I had this happen on my old Octavia, the rear screen exploded outwards. There was a fault with the heating element it never turned it self off after being used and the rear screen got so hot it just gave up

I believe it was a known fault at the time. Rear screen replaced FOC.

Glass is "on order" as expected not in stock. Will get an update next week.

Good news is that the nearest fitter is .... a neighbour!! - so I hope I get a good job done!

Graham

Lots of interesting theories as to what may have happened...thanks all

Thanks LP - that's the way I looked at it .... the 3rd one over and done with!.

At least I don't need any air-con with the rear window missing.

Graham

Well you can pretend you have a first gen Freelander and the rear window is just wound down!!! emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Why would a SM owner EVER pretend to be a Freelander owner???

That's SOOOOO lame :D

Sorry to hear about the rear screen.

The Ibiza my Missus owned for a while had two new rear screens in 5 days, the first was a fault - heater element not working - replaced under warrenty, the second was a cricket ball - a clean six.

The service manager at the local SEAT garage came out with some very colourfull language ....

Good news,...

A very nice and professional chap has just fitted a new tailgate glass, at 21:00 this evening. As a near neighbour he did it as a last job on his way home, else I would have had to wait another 4 days.

Didn't gert chance to take pics aka TP with his front screen, but interestng to see the wiring for the antenna and heater elemenets etc, and how cleverly allthe plastic fits together.

The repair comes with a 3 yr warranty - which I hope I don't have to use.

Auto Windscreens was the company, first class service in my opinion.

Now the Yeti is off to the garage on Friday for the towbar electircs to be sorted!

My rear glass shattered in my last car, Audi A4 avant and I though I was the only one. It happened as I was gently reversing, no other cars near. It was very cold and I wondered whether it was the heat inside. God knows.

Yup

just trying to get all the tiny bits of glass out of the car now ...

Expect that will be a few days/weeks yet!
