Fitting a Brodit iPad headrest mount

Featured Replies

I ordered a Brodit iPad Headrest mount from DSL Developments on 24th May and received it yesterday. I was able to fit it today and take some photos so thought I'd offer up some initial thoughts.

The mount consists of a clamp with a built-in ProClip mounting and a holder for the iPad which attaches to it. The clamp is designed to fit around the posts of a headrest. Unfortunately it didn't fit the headrest in my 2009 Elegance. The supplied M5 x 45 cap head screws weren't long enough to secure the two halves of the clamp together. They are long enough for a maximum headrest post diameter of ~13mm. The posts in the Octavia are 14mm diameter.

I advised DSL Developments of this and ordered some replacement screws from Service Champions which arrived today. I wasn't sure which length to get so ordered 2 M5 x 55 and 2 M5 x 60 screws. In the end I used the M5 x 55 screws to secure the clamp as shown below:

The iPad holder screws to the clamp in the same way as all Brodit ProClip mounts do. It looks like this fitted in place:

The iPad holder can easily be removed by undoing a single retained screw, which is great if you're not going to be using the mount for a while and don't want to advertise you have an iPad.

It is very easy to clip the iPad into the holder. It is secured at the top and bottom as shown below. It is important to get the iPad in the right way round so the volume rocker and orientation lock aren't being pressed on.

The wings at the side don't touch the iPad and are only used for location.

As you can see, the holder is great way to use the iPad in a car to keep the little ones in your life entertained. I'm sure my daughter will love watching Peppa Pig and Mickey Mouse on it.

Nice

Bit of a big advert for the tea leaves even if you don't leave the iPad in the car!

i like that a lot. shame i can't afford an ipad!

Sorry mate but thats just screaming "nick me" and with no pad, it looks like a 6th form metalwork project. No offence intended, just my humble opinion. emoticon-0148-yes.gif

Just because you can, doesn't mean you should..............

I agree. You could save your own time (and the Polices') by smashing your own windows.

I like it

If the seat is pushed all the way back and you lean forward does your face come anywhere near it? It looks like a perfect position to make a mess in a head-on

Seriously I'm really srtuggling with the whole Brodit mount "thing". Invariably they look just what they are - a lash up and I just can't understand why people rave about them! Stick you bloody iphone in the cup holder and get a proper hands free kit!!! You owe it to your gorgeous Skoda NOT to fit aftermarket cobble jobs for no real reason!

Again no offence intended but PLEASE!!

and anybody who knows about these things will tell you "never buy a 1st generation Apple product"..........emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Personally I would use a set of OEM looking HCD Headrests

have the Ipad stashed safe somewhere and have the video out (this is a presumption base on touch/ipod/etc) connect to them. Makes for a much cleaner install I think. And some have a cover so no need to carry a load of electronics after a journey if you dont want it nicked.

I remove the actual iPad holder when I'm not using it, it's a 10 second job to remove it, leaving the clamp attached to the headrest.

It isn't going to be used by a normal passenger. It is going to be used when my daughter is in the car in her car seat. There is no way she could possibly come into contact with the iPad.

Why is it that people who post offensive posts always include "no offence intended" (sic) immediately after they have insulted someone? Also, can you explain why it is that people fit after market wheels to their VRSs? You owe it to your gorgeous Skoda to keep the stock wheels, not some aftermarket cobble job. No offense intended!

As for the "1st gen Apple thing", I identified a number of uses for the iPad and have no problem with being an early adopter of it. I went in with my eyes open.

Because I really wasn't out to cause you offence merely having a rant about Brodit products which I feel are overpriced and just not that great! As for the wheels - mine came with 17" Zeniths and I had a choice of what to fit as a replacement............so I went for 18" Zeniths!! I'm with you on the aftermarket wheel thing!

Hey, good for you - if it does what you want then great. personally I think its a hell of a lot of money for what is nothing more than an oversized i-Touch! I'm waiting for the 2nd generation model which will have a more usable amount of storage and a usb socket so I can use it as a photo viewer without having to pay Jobsie another £25 for a "Camera Adaptor" to stick in the dock which I will probably lose..........

Hey, don't get me wrong, its a cracking bit of kit but the simple omission of a basic USB port just p*sses me off and is yet another example of Jobsie and his cronies sticking two fingers up at joe public!

Excellent piece of kit.

Excellent use of the iPad, as it runs a video for over 10 hours for most people it won't need wires trailing all over the place for power or video. The kids can even plug in their headphones or you can use BT ones for the totally cable free install.

I got my 3G iPad the day it came out in the UK. Bought the Co-Pilot Sat Nav which totally blows away the crappy and very expensive Skoda SatNav and has a good supply of easily accessible music and audiobooks.

I don't think I have put my iPad down for long since I got it. I felt no risk in it being first generation, as someone said earlier in this thread it is based heavily on Touch/iPhone technology so their are over 80 million of those in the field so I felt fairly safe.

When it is charging it sits in a dock and works as a 10" Photo frame, without an USB plugs hanging off it.

It is where I check my emails, work and home, the morning news from various websites, my magazines, Wired and Time so far, when I went to the States a couple of weeks ago it I used it on the plane for hours of video and some interesting games (Civilisation and Command and Conquer) along with 70 odd PDF magazines, along with some books, music and audiobooks. While I was away I used the iPad for watching the Canadian Grand Prix which wasn't on US TV where I was, connecting to my Home TV system and for good measure when we wanted a movie we watched the iPad either stored on the iPad or connecting back to my home theatre and watching one of the movies on the home systems.

All the above you can do on an iPhone or iPod Touch, but alot smaller, two people watching a three inch screen is OK but tiring.

I could have taken my laptop, but I didn't need it, and as the iPad weighs little more than the power brick for the laptop so didn't carry it.

The tablet is the way forward, whether it runs iOS or Android, it will replace most of what we do with personal computers.

Generally there are two types of people who rant against the iPad, those that don't get it and those that want geek control over it.

Those that don't get it will get it when they play with one, those that are geeky will go the Android route. Everyone is happy :-)

I think it's great and I really appreciate these sort of write ups. It allows us to actually see the product in use, how the iPad fits, how the bracket fits to the car etc. It's usually the case that manufacturer photos are either too small or don't show the bracket in use. Thanks for taking the time to post up those photos.

The bracket looks great and IMO the iPad is an really excellent bit of kit. As already said, it won't need a power cable or video/audio cables so it's a really nice setup for the kids in the back. If I had kids I'd get one. I always thought sat nav and map browsing on the iPad would be excellent due to the large screen. You could look at Google Maps as if it was a paper map. The iPhone screen is just a little bit too small and it's too prohibitive for proper map navigating. I have the iPhone 4 and my girlfriends parents have the iPad. I'd like to have one instead of the Columbus unit for music and sat nav but I don't think you could mount one on the dash! It's huge!
