FL vRs paint problems

Featured Replies

Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone has had similar problems with the paint on their car being "thin"? My FL vRs is suffering with a large amount of paint chips on the front end, and half way up the bonnet, making it look 7 years old, not 7 months, and the rear bumper has all sorts of fine scratches like someone has run a brillo pad around it. I wash and polish it like I have any other car I've had, and even the beloved T cut does bugger all. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance........... :smirk:

Yeah, don't use T-Cut. Try Meguiars ScratchX 2.0 with a good dollop of elbow grease.

NEVER used a carwash in this car, I hate the things.

I hand wash everything on the car, I slow rinse first, then apply warm water with wash and wax (just started using ICE products) and get it nice and foamy, washin off every panel as I go. Once it's all cleaned down, wash off again with low pressure water, and then quick wipe down wipe non-abrasive sponge or chammy. Once dry, a full coat of Turtle wax Platinum Extra, then buff down with lint free cloth. All the glass is done with ICE for the rain resistance and then jack up, wheels off and all alloys are fully cleaned, brakes etc.........

I don't do it quickly, I never stretch the fuel pump around the back of the car, it's like someone has gone around the 2 outermost parts of the rear bumper and scuffed it for fun.

The chips on the front are stone inflicted and stupidly deep for stone ships. They just tear chunks out!!!!!!

I've had the windscreen replaced already, and it's looking like a 3rd maybe on its way with all the chips. It's a rediculous set of circumstances of bad weather and **** roads, but the paint should be better than this!!!! My 12 years old escort looks better than my 7 month old Octy!!!!

Stone chips can't be avoided particularily if you are a spirited driver!

I had my previous car 5 years from new and the front looked pebble dashed in that time.

I noticed my vRS has a couple a small chips after only 2 months but not down the bare metal like mt previous car would.

Paint on my vRS is much thicker than my Mazda, but its a bit harder so tends to chip easier. Hence I have VentureShield fitted from new :)

I have to agree about the ease of chipping. Although the paint quality and depth is good on my car, it has got some bad (large diameter and deep) stone chips which I guess is a result of hard paint. My last Octy was similar, although not quite as bad. Never noticed a significant stone chips problem with my old Mk2 Golf and Jettas or with my Megane.

All you can do is take extra care to hang back from other cars at speed and get good at touch ups (mixing the colour and the lacquer for the top coat and using a good, fine artists brush, wet sanding and polishing).

where did you get it fitted and how much if you dont mind saying,is it the full front end (bonnet/bumper/wings and wing mirrors) and can you get full rear bumper done.

I had the full fronts and top of rear done, best £400 I've spent. Was done in the showroom. B)

On cleaning my car at the weekend have noticed the paint has started to bubble and peel next to my number plate on the front of my car, just one niggle that will be brought up at the first service. Car has been hand washed from new.

In my opinion if you have a new car and you are having problems with the paintwork ( stonechips not included ) get back to your dealers and make your voice known. They should sort it out under warranty, dont try and do it yourself, let them sort it out. You have paid the money and you expect the service. :dull:

Remember I rejected my Candy White FL, largely because of the paint quality (thin on rear bumper, drip on the A-pillar and flaking off on a front arch). So shoddy.
