Number Plates - how are yours fixed?

Featured Replies

Hi - bit of a weird one :D

How are your number plates fixed to your Yeti? Mine have been taped on with double sided tape that doesn't look like it will stand the test of time. I have already had re-fit one side.

If yours are screwed on, how is this done? Are there pre drilled mounts in the bumper etc?

Thanks

S

p.s. if all else fails i'll let the dealer refit them - I did ask if they would be screwed and he said yes!!

Go to the Skoda website's used car area. Go to the Yeti section and once you have clicked on the relevant car click the Enlarge button top right. They have pretty huge photos on there and you can clearly see all the various dealers' ways of fixing plates and all manner of advertising they stick on. Most all seemed to be screwed on.

My front ones are screwed on straight through the bumper and not using the OEM mount holes (like rawlplugs) (a bodge by the dealer!). The rears were stuck on with tape. When I replaced them with custom plates I reused the screw holes at the front and fitted the rears with screws into the OEM mount holes. Due to the curvature of the tailgate I then had to add some extra double sided tape at the ends of the places to hold them flat to the body.

The front ones seem a little flimsy as they extend below the bottom of the bumper, but so far they have survived the car wash twice.

Thanks guys!

So it looks like there are holes there ready for the plates to screw to - just the dealers being lazy with the tape?!

Both ends with screws using OEM mounts.

Whilst washing our Hettie the Yetis rear end... after our Welsh Adventure (our cappucinno had turned cream :o )

I, by sheer coincidence, was admiring how the dealer  had colour coordinated the screws to match the rear plate...

the 1st one was black as it was in the middle of a letter

and the 2nd one was yelllow as on a blank bit of the numberplate...what a considerate and thoughtful touch I mused...so Thank You to Startin Skoda at Powick

I will check the front when Hettie returns :)

ADD EDIT: yes... the front one screwed in as well and with a blue left one and a white right one!

I'll probably wait until mine give up the ghost and then fit them properly!!!! Don't fancy pulling off the tape just yet

Number plate theft is a rising threat so I'd advise anyone to properly fix their plates and/or get some of these new clever plates that disintegrate when you take them off.

I believe it has to be done like that by law, as if one used a yellow cap in the middle of the black stroke of a letter one could alter the appearance of the letter. There is some rule I seem to remember that the cap has to match the colour of the area below the cap thats greater than 50%. So if its over half on a black letter stroke it has to be a black cap and visa versa if over a yellow or white area of background.

Ditto with mine - and colour matched caps too.

Again my number plates are fitted with yellow and black bolts, well done Grey Gables.

Chris.

I recenly went to Halfords to get a new set of number plate screws, I have a trailer and wanted to fix the number plate.

But the screws they sold were only Yellow and White, i.e. not black.

On enquiring why Halfords only sold the screws in yellow/white I was told it is now illegal to drill through the lettering.

So you either have yellow (rear) or white (front) screws to choose from.

If as in my case you find the holes predrilled in your trailer mean they would come through to the black lettering on your number plate what do you do?

Either dispense with the screws and go with the unltra sticky double sided tape, or buy some of the black plastic screws off e-bay!!

btw - My Yeti both plates are screwed on.

Mine are screwed on back and front and most importantly level! Nice job by Allams.

The Yeti has license plate holes predrilled from factory, on both ends.

Most EU countries have a standard size license plate, so there are plenty of plastic frames/holders around. They even come in chrome.

I took a pair of frames from a BMW dealer, sanded off the BMW dealer logo and screwed the frames on the car. Then I used the 3 clips provided to secure the plates without any visible screws, for front and rear.

I'd be very wary of using a holder where the plate can just be slid out in the UK. Especially when you live in London where plates get stolen to get around the Congestion Charge zone.

But Speedster isn't in the UK, so perhaps they don't have that problem.

I know. Hence me stating " ...in the UK..." emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

True, I live in Greece.

They only steal license plates in order to use them in a terrorist hit or a bank robbery here, not for the Congestion Charge zone though, not that I have heard of.

Anyway, removing the license plates requires the use of a Philips screwdriver if they are placed with screws.

The plastic mounts (frames) still require a flat head screwdriver or a pocket knife in order to release the plates.

Some people use rivets to secure the plates, but I suppose they are against the law for one, (since they should be removable) and also I would not like to have them violently and carelessly removed by the traffic police in case of an unfortunate parking violation…

screwed on, colour coded caps, and the dealer add on emblem under the plates

On my cars I take the plates off, then put them back with two runs of strong double sided tape which nearly fills the profile of the plate.

They are secure and they won't be going missing anytime soon. :)

Because they are fully supported by 2mm of foam tape they have a bit of shock resistance and don't crack easilly too.

Personally I prefer not to have holes and screws in them. But that's just my obsessive side. ;)
