oil change advice

Featured Replies

i'm giving my car an oil change today. does anyone know how i can remove the engine cover? i think there's a bolt at the top? do i just unscrew that?

and does the filter need a 32mm socket wrench to remove it?

hold the cover at the front either side and a slight tug upwards till it comes away...then slide it towards you to release rear locater...

My vRS needed a 36mm socket for the oil filter

ok bit of a silly question but can anyone send me a link to the 32 or 35" mm socket wrench? i do have a kit at home but i think it only goes upto 21mm

i just want the wrench and the socket to go on it?

I bought mine from halfords, Lazerline socket or something. Cost £9!!!!!

thats the socket but what about the wrench? do i need a 1/2" adaptor to fit on it

just a socket set wrench that has a 1/2" drive or a bar with a 1/2" drive..

32m/m 6 sided socket 1/2" drive for removal of Fabia VRS oil filter plastic cap.

19m/m 6 sided socket 1/2" drive for removal of Fabia VRS oil sump plug.

Fully synthetic 5W40 VW 505.01 spec engine oil for Fabia VRS, nearly full 5 litres from empty to fill maximum level.

Advise copper washer on sump plug renewed and threaded plug if you want.

Extreme care tightening sump plug because of alloy sump metal thread can be easily stripped.

30 Nm / 22 Ibs ft Sump plug torque wrench setting.

I add my 2005 Fabia VRS has definitely got a 32m/m plastic filter cap, those with 36m/m please add what year is their car??

thanks! veryhelpful

I changed the oil just now! I sucked it out using the pela pump and got a little over 4 litres out. Then refilled with fresh new 5w40.

I didn't change the oil filter because I don't have the wrench as yet and also no major issue as the filter is only 3 months old. :giggle:

I'll get a 36mm 6 sided socket and wrench before the next oil change in 3 months.

All set up for the next 12 months as have enough filters and oil to keep me going for another 4 changes.

But on one of these i'll get my mechanic to drain from the sump so that the plug+washer will get replaced.

I'm very impressed with the pump as it performed better than expected and after it was sucked out I stuck the dipstick in and there was no trace of oil on it whatsoever! i had to stick it in the hole three times to check my eyes were not playing tricks

I also used a Pela pump for the last 2 changes (always did it from the sump plug before). Our driveway slopes, and the car was facing downhill the first time which didn't work too well. The second time I faced it uphill and it was grand - got about 4 litres out plus what was in the filter housing.

My 2004 04 Fabia vRS is 32 mm. If you are interested and have imperial Sockets/spanners, then 32mm = 1" 1/4 and 36mm is 1" 7/16.

I'm not sure about my mothers 53 Fabia TDI, I can't check it until Sunday (she is on Holiday).

Thanks Jim H for your added info, completes a picture for future reference.

So on a Fabia VRS up to 2004 on 04 registration plate, filter cap 34mm.

Then like my late June 2005 Fabia VRS a 36mm filter cap onwards from 2005 on 05 registration plate .

Thanks, mine was 32mm as you mentioned. It's a 2005 vRS

hehe! and i'm sending off a sample of the oil I drained out for lab testing  just to see how good the oil is and what is in it in terms of particles or other deposits that may indicate piston or cylinder wear.
