Cornering front fog lights

Featured Replies

I'm considering a Yeti. One of the (many) options I've found is for "cornering" front fog lights. As I understand it (and I may be understanding it wrongly) this option means that one of the front fog lights will switch on when you turn a corner, the idea being to give you a bit of extra illumination as you make the the turn.

Two questions -

Is this legal in the UK? I though front fog lamps could only be used when the visibility was low due to fog/falling snow?

Is the feature useful?

Hi,

yes; the left fog will come on when indicating or turning left and vis versa for right. This happens up to 40 kph. Also both front fogs will come on in reverse.

Yes there legal

Yes I find them useful when navigating twisty country lanes at night, were you need to slow right down to negotiate bends.

Hope thats of help.

Yes, thanks for the clarification -I'd hoped they would be of use on twisty (slow) roads at night.

Do you know why they're legal? Is there some exemption for this sort of feature?

Hi Brendan,

I believe there covered by a European directive / legislation.

Brendan welcome to the forum. You might want to look at these two threads first:

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/163358-a-guide-to-popular-yeti-options/

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/160051-if-you-are-about-to-order-a-yeti-things-to-think-about/

Most non-subjective things will be answered there.

I'd already seen the threads, thanks, but was interested in whether or not the things were legal in the UK! And, of course, in what people thought of them.

This is a very useful forum, many people giving their time to help others wade through the quagmire of buying a new car.

OH it sure is! This forum has helped me a great deal. Especially since the SUK website and brochures are really pretty useless.

But back to topic. You will see plenty of Mercedes cars and a host of Volkswagens and Skodas on the road already sporting cornerning fog lamps. You look at them and think ah that car has a broken fog lamp on one side only to later realise what you saw was the one coming on as an added feature. So you might have seen this in action already without realising.

Spot on! I had this back from the AskThePolice website ...

"As long as the cornering fog lights are factory fitted, then the car should

remain be legal in the UK, by way of the EC Whole Vehicle Type Approval

(ECWVTA) under European Directive 2007/46/EC, which has been inco[r]porated in

UK Law."

Of course it was hedged about with "we take no responsibility for this advice" etc, etc, but I guess they're giving the best they can for "free". OK, I can stop worrying now ... just out of curiosity, can one disable the feature? ;)

hi Brendan,

No there is no option to disable this function; although the dealer might by connecting up the VagCom.

personally find them very useful as I have several right-angled bends to negotiate on the way back home - at about 5-15 mph. The extra illumination is very welcome.

I was amongst the 'it's a gimick' brigade until I used them and on the twisty country roads or dimly lit town streets they are very effective. Also the cornering beam system of the Xenons puts the lights exactly where you want them going round the bends - not straight on where you don't want to be!

I don't have them, but the cornering action of the xenons seem to put all the light you need in the right place.
