vRS170CR Fuel Economy

Featured Replies

I've had my CR about 3 months now, covered approx 3k miles and it's averaging about 46mpg. This is mostly a good mix of A and B roads, plus the daily grind to work and driving style is variable depending on the mood - there's a roofrack on too with some bike carriers. Only managed 1 longish trip so far to Kielder and the computer said 51.9 which I thought was decent given the types of road over there. Seem to be filling up on average about every 2 and a half weeks.

What hasn't been emphasised so far is that you don't buy a CR 170 just for economy. If you want a really economical diesel, go for a 1.6 or 1.9 and drive it sedately.

I went for a CR 170 to get the combination of good economy (45 -55 mpg depending on where I'm driving) and terrific verve and low-down torque. The petrol vRS is also excellent for verve and torque, but not so economical. It's also a lot quieter than the PD 140 I had in my previous VW Golf estate.

Of the 18 cars I've had in over 40 years of owing cars, the CR 170 is the best compromise betwen performance and economy of them all. And the icing on the cake is that in an Octavia those same mechanicals are £6,000 cheaper than they would be in an Audi A4.

That's exactly why I am asking the question, to gauge what difference the CR engine is from the PD, specially having owned a fabia vrs remapped, this will help in my decision between either a 2nd hand mk1 furby or a CR engined octavia.

Manufacturers claims on these new economical engines are pure fantasy, even driving one as recommended you never get close to the claims, I have tried in my 500 & it takes all the pleasure out of driving.

One year, 20k, brim to brim = 50mpg (tracked on iPhone app)

approx 80% motorway driving (about 80% of that is restricted to 50-60 mph due to traffic).

On a run from Yorkshire to scottish highlands I averaged 57.6mpg calc'd.

That was 67mph cruise control on m-ways (this section got me 62mpg) and nice smooth aroads with fun until I got to tarbutt, there was virtually no traffic though which helped.

Average over 16000 seems to be 46mpg, 20% m-way 80% town. I get mileage from my work so a lot of my Driving is deliberately economical.

My average over the last 2000 miles or so is 45mpg, which is a mixture of short drives to work and longer runs on motorway and A roads, drops to about 40 if I drive more enthusiastically. Best I've ever managed was 58mpg on a motorway run through rush hour (so lower average speed than normal). Worst is about 25-30mpg driving on little single track back roads in the Yorkshire Dales. These figures are from the trip rather than measuring it myself. I've found the mpg has improved now the weather's warmer (and the engine's getting more run in), but on a really hot day it drops if the aircon is working hard! I've got a 59 plate FL with 4500 miles on the clock and CR engine

...............you will get....42 mpg.

Mine's doing around 40-45 ish brim to brim with DSG and slightly more according to maxidot. Having read these posts, I think the OP should be convinced that CR is the way forward ! The PD is fun but the CR is frugal AND FUN.

My pre FL 09 with currently 18 k according to the Maxidot on Trip 2 says 47 Mpg thats a mix of town and a roads
