Operation temporary alloy refurb! (now with final pics too!)

Featured Replies

Shall keep updated.

Was gutted the day after I got the mongrel back on the road with new alloys, I clocked the rear left on the rock garden as I left my spot at home! :( So, I figured today, with a show tomorrow, I would attempt to mask the worst of the damage. What I did / am doing this with is the following

Can of glossy white spray paint

Plenty of brown tape & newspaper

150 grit sandpaper

I ensured the can of paint was warm by sitting it in a pot of hot water for a while before use. Also checked the wheel was clean. The areas had been sanded previously whilst I had some spare time during the last turbo on & off....

So, seemed simple enough - mask off, sand down and wipe clean areas affected, and have got their first coat of white paint drying now. One more to follow, then probably just one lacquering, then wet & dry to polish.

I know there will be small "join" lines to masked off areas, but until I get a full refurb, this should be a vast improvement on the damage as it was originally. It also seems the white paint I am using is a decent glossy colour match to the original too.

Damage! :(

I`m tempted to keep have a go at doing the same. Got myself a set of freshly refurbished black S3 wheels, to then go and muller the rim on two of them :(

I recommend getting gloss black spraypaint though, not white like me! ;)

I did a similar thing when I removed the alloys from my Fabia two at a time to clean the insides. One wheel toppled over onto the drive whilst it was drying, damaging the paint on the spokes. I cleaned the other three on the grass. Good luck with the repair, Jason.

All being done on the grass!

Have allowed 2 coats of paint to dry (hot sun is helping speed this up) and already have first coat of lacquer drying. Shall apply another shortly, allow to dry for 3 to 4 hours then remove all masking and see what kind of polshing up (if any) is needed. Might just leave it if it looks reasonable.

Decided not to bother with polishing at least, not until the paint layer/s have fully hardened. Definite lip to new paint but all-in all? It was the kind of outcome I was after! Anyone see the "damage" in the last pic? :D

Do you not have any centre caps Jason?

Can't get any that fit these damn wheels with the way the hubs sit, hence the painted ends of the hubs in the middle of the wheel. Have got some that "kind of fit" on the front wheels which have different hub setup

Nice work, Jason. :)

Looking good - nice job :)

look good, nice job emoticon-0148-yes.gif
