Dipsticks

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Since having the engine cover off to have a quick look at the throttle body (which was bloody filthy by the way!) I re-fitted the engine cover and noted that the dipstick was kind of warped.

So in my semi-infinite wisdom, thought that it can't be right, and got the pliers and proceeded to straighten it out.

Alas, it seems this tinkering has identified an issue...

Now when the dipstick is all the way in (as far as it can go to be secure) - it seems to be fouling something (and makes a noticeable repeated knocking, and is generally forced back upward out of the dipstick hole about 4 inches or so).

First question - How long is the dipstick on a Fabia 1.4mpi anyone? Need to know the length of one for comparison. I get a sneaking feeling that the stick in the current furby isn't the right one...

Second question - what would the dipstick be fouling on, and any ideas as to why?

I think it's sort of designed to twist itself as it goes into the dipstick extension tube somehow?! The design of the Favorit one made more sense and was easier to read too. Will try measure mine tomorrow if I get a chance or unless someone beats me to it :)

I've got a 1.4mpi and the dipstick is twisted, I'm 99.99999% sure it's meant to be like that. Never had any problems.

Talking of the engine cover, have you had any trouble with oil coming out of the top where the engine cover doesn't seal around the top of the filling point? Cause that was a major issue for me before I took it off.

As a matter of fact... You described one of my exact issues...

I've yet to find a lid so I can ditch the engine cover permenantly and bother to clean up all the engine bay.

However I also realised that one of the retaining nuts on my engine cover was missing and there was a foot that sat on the rocker cover that didn't have any rubber on it, it was rattling constantly. So much so that it left a rather shiny bit on the rocker cover from rubbing! :S

A little rubber foot put underneath (I tore apart an old set of pliers for the rubber) and that's gone now.

Could you possibly measure the dipstick for me and take a couple of piccies of the twist? Might have to put it back in tonight hehe

There should be a spare oil cap under the engine cover that pulls out, and simply pushes on the rocker cover. This is what I am using and have had no issues with it blowing off or anything. If yours is missing get a Favorit oil cap off ebay/ jorily.com and that should fit perfect.

I fully intend to once i've gotten the main issues sorted, as i'm going to then do a full engine bay cleanup... I'd quite like a shiny engine in there as opposed to a black bit of plastic ;)

Also - Has anyone bothered to do the elephant hose/catch can mod on their 1.4mpis? Reason i'm asking is that when cleaning the throttle body up last night I noted the air intake had a slight coating of oil inside it - can't possibly be good for the MAP, which in turn could be cause for poor fuel economy amongst other things.

Think i'll be doing that too rather soonish.

If anyone can measure their dipsticks for me to compare (ooo-er!) and possibly take a piccy so I can reproduce the warping on it tonight, it'd be much appreciated.
