recommended subwoofer size?

Featured Replies

as above i am lookin at making an install for my octavia and im stuck on sub size :S

my music tastes vary ie: dance, dubstep, hip hop, garage, drum n bass etc so something capable to cope as i know different sizes vary to musical tastes.

10" for punch 12" for thud 15" for annoying the neighbours..

my bro liked the similar style music to u and he went for twin 10"'s which is a good comprise for the thud of a 12..

I like my 12" sqaure as im rnb all the way.. :)

So after you chose the amount and size.. you got option of port or sealed..

Port = more emphasis on lower notes,

Sealed = more level across the bass spectrum,

Advantages on ported is less stress on sub, downside is increased space required. and opposite for sealed.

i'll only be installing one in hopefully a custom box where the cd changer currently lives, so i still have boot space :giggle:

if i look for a decent 12" that should give me the required bass/thud im after? ( i think 15" might be to big for that gap) B)

umm problem well.. not problem.. but sound quality of a 12" for drum and bass stuff is no way near as sharp as 10's.

Have a play at halfords to hear what a 10 feels like compared to a 12. your listening to the precision of bass and not the power of bass lol.. unless you prefer power over precision.. I tend to hurl very easily on bass notes around 100-300hz.. :p (geek read: Fundamental frequency of the body) so I avoid that at all costs! alot of drum and bass stuff hit that mark hence why I dont like it!

15's are for shaking cars.. and houses..

maybe i could make another box where the net is opposite the changer and house a 10" either side? Mmmm decisions :S

i like to feel the bass aswell as hear it

Just had a quick look on the market currently.. how weird! they have 11" and 13/13.5" now... :wonder:

ok so.. decent 10" with a bit of power, you can look at stuff like this:

600W rms is good enough for daily use imo. I like my square subs.. obviously true audiophiles will comment on how it ever so slightly give none perfect sound waves because its not circular... :wonder:

If you wanted to be silly you can get one of these..

ps, only using website as reference, think you can get stuff cheaper elsewhere probably..

Oh I would recommend Boss amps though, budget but powerful.

There are way more considerations than just size!

How much are you looking to spend? Are you building your own enclosure or buying one? What type of enclosure will you go for? Etc.

i know what your sayin, i will be on a budget as the enclosure looks like it will have to be custom made and will no doubt cost a few ££. i dont want an spl quality system im just after a bit of bass as i enjoy my music :giggle:

If very budget is your aim the best place to look (if you dont mind spending few hours) is ebay, can pick up some decent bargains. Best to hear it in person before you buy though

Then for box, you can make it yourself, bit of effort though.. Custom boxes I found was around £50, simply give them dimension and they make it and send it to you.

If you just want a bit of bass, and aren't really bothered about anything else, save your cash and get a sub in a box from a retailer, or off eBay. Even a 10" will give you plenty of bass. If you make your own enclosure, there are lots of things to consider in terms of dimensions and desired characteristics.
