You might have 4x4 running gear but you need the right tyres

Featured Replies

Hehehe... Some people. Just because their car is a 4x4 they think they can go anywhere... This guy soon found out you can't!

I would hope a Yeti would have been able to get out of this? Due to the higher ground clearence? Or not? Would our tyres have caused the same?

Though some people have had more luck taking their Bentleys off road:

I don't think ground clearance is the issue here. It'll be the combination of road tyres that will become slick very quickly as the tread will fill up. Plus I think the Bentleys have a torsen differential system which is mostly rwd and not adjustable so the front wheels with all the weight on them might have had a bit of grip but the Bentley can't adjust the torque split, like the Yeti can. I would imagine the Yeti would go through that if you carried enough speed into it and didn't stop.

Best tyres for mud = BIG lugs.

Best tyres for loose sand = No lug pattern at all, or you just dig holes in the sand.

Yeti with standard road tyres might have been in deeper in the mud, as the road clearance would allow it.

Has anyone found any all terrain tyres that fit the Yeti? I've tried all manner of tyres sizes that are similar to standard on 17", 16", and 15" wheels and nobody seems to make an AT tyre for it.

James,

BFG, or Kumho, or General Grabber?

Yeah I know I had BFG AT on my Nissan Patrol a few years ago and G Grabbers on a Grand Cherokee but has anyone had any luck in finding one that fits the Yeti.

The tyre size on a TDi SE is 225/50 R17.

I have tried every single tyre size that comes within 2% rolling radius of that and every make of tyre possible and I've been looking at tyres a lot lately, just ordered some 285/75 Hankook MT tyres for my trip to Morocco!

James,

if that is the same size as on the Freelander Sport, they are available, if expensive. I'm sure some of our guys have fitted GG's.

(see PM, as I'm at work)

James,

You should be able to get them in 215/65-16, which is a better size for off-road than the 17"ers, but naturally different wheels. They are about 4% bigger, but than is also OK IMHO.

They are rare aren't they!!

Plenty of car tyres but few 4x4.

Looking at the picture I guess he over-rev'ed it, ho,ho

Coming to a Skoda forum I wasn't expecting to see BFGs discussed.

I've got a Range Rover and a Defender as well. I swear by BFGs, great tyres I've used on many vehicles for years.

BFG AllTerrains..........brilliant tyre that last for ever, but seem to be expensive until you realise the former comment. Awesome off-road and on-road.

Must check sizes :smirk:

I agree they are excellent, very resistant to rocks and tree roots ripping the sidewall open and very good grip.

I've got a set of 285/75 BFG Mud Terrains on my Landcruiser. Considering how long and heavy it is, it certainly gets places!

Although they have got limits!

Running BFG muds on the Camel at the moment, as they were original equipment.

Know from older ones that All-Terrains rule for most things non-extreme, including Morocco.

Image not workie!!

Image not workie!!

It is for me. Should be a yellow(ish) Defender and a blue Rangie.

I removed the second pic as that didn't want to work. :wonder:

That's a nice 110! They are very capable.

I went to a 4x4 site recently with some friends, one of the guys had a 90 and they really do perform very well offroad considering they are so basic in their design. Another chap had a Pajero JR which I've never seen before that got everywhere the 90 and Landcruiser went it seems just to skip over things like a little goat whereas the landtank just dithers itsway over crests like a drunk rhino.

I originally bought my LC to go to Morocco in but I'm not doing now so I'm just going to play with it for a bit and then sell it.

EDIT: Really cool plate on your RangeRover.

Image doesn't work for me either. However, if I enter the image URL in the browser directly, it does. Weird!

Nice pair of Landys!

I was talking to a tyre supplier the other day about winter Tyres for my Honda (thinking it would be cheaper than buying a 4*4 yeti) and he said don't bother trying until December as they are not available in the summer. I know mud Tyres are not quite the same thing but it might be worth waiting for winter.
