does any one know how to bring up the fault codes ?

Vagcom is a handy way. ;) Quite a few members have it - Might be worth checking out the vagcom members map in the vagcom section

You need the car scanned with VCDS (or the dealers VAS) to read the fault codes.

is there not a way to display it on the dash like on the vauxhalls reading the light flashing sequience? where can i get a fault code reader

Nope - These cars are too technical for that, and the fault is stored on the ECU. You need a scanner (vagcom is an excellent tool for this) to read them off the ECU.

Vauxhall? pah! :D [spits]

Nope,

As Jason said it's easiest to look on the VCDS Owners Map and find someone local to you to scan the car.

cheers will do

Mine did this around Christmas time and it turned out to be 1 glow plug !

you can buy a pretty cheap VAG code reader off ebay. i did for about 20 quid this device gives u a code which u can look up on OBD .com or a similar website. i did this recently because my engine managment light was on it turned out to be the fuel temperature sensor which cost me 15 quid and was really easy to replace, i then reset the engine light using the VAG code reader. Its also important to note that when the engine light is on (depending what the fault code is) it can trip the ECU into a 'safe' mode which is designed to keep the engine safe untill you get the fault fixed. i personally noticed a drop in power, mpg and my throttle response was shocking to say the least. After i fixed it it was like i had a new Vrs

hope this helps

where abouts are you? If your anywhere near me, I have VagCom, and can help if your near to manchester!
