painting front grill

Featured Replies

thinking of colour coding the front grill surround.has anybody had any problems with the paint flaking?just dont want to get it done and then it starts flaking :dull:

So long as you strip the chrome, give it bit of a sanding, ensure it is clean and free of dust/grease, and use some decent primer I can't see any reason it would flake. Planning to try this myself at some point.

removing the chrome is tedious....key the chrome with 300-400 wet n dry then etch primer it then paint n laquer....

etch primer..

Mines been done for a year, no problems - although I did get it done professionally!

Etch primer is more to promote adhesion to metal though. I'd have thought the grille was plastic?! and that the chrome effect also has no metal within it.

Sorry no - you need etch primer, otherwise you get crazy paving

Notwithstanding what is said above, when I did mine I keyed the chrome, and didn't take it right back to plastic.

I tried ordinary primer, which appeared to go on fine. I then put black magic on it, and it initially seemed fine. I left it to dry, quite proud in the fact I'd done a good job, only to come back later and find it had crazed over.

I read other posts, which mentioned the use of etching primer. Tried it, and it worked fine.

Having done mine twice now, I wouldn't use any other primer. I think until you've actually tried doing it yourself, you can't really say what's going to work and what isn't.

I was spraying the grille surround with it - not sniffing it :p

;) no nose

I'm pretty sure if you soak the grille in bleach it will strip the chrome off, will try and find something from another forum to back this up when I get a chance...

Here's the article I was thinking of... http://www.mazda3forums.co.uk/index.php?topic=3026.0
