Clunking noise in reverse when using the brakes

Featured Replies

Hi all

wondering if anyone can advise to a problem I'm having.

When applying the brakes after reversing, I get a 'clunking' noise from the front, think its probably O/S/F area. Its just one solid clunk, was a bit worrying at first? Just had the garage check while they replaced an ABS sensor and they can't find anything wrong, but they did mention another customer of theirs in a VW polo has the same issue.

I've had the brakes replaced recently at the front (but forgot to mention this noise at the time) and noise still persists. Brakes work fine otherwise.

Car is Octavia 90bhp diesel, 53reg.

Any ideas?

It's quite likely to be just the brake pads moving in the calipers or calipers moving on the carriers.

The calipers and pads get settled into their "normal position" when predominantly braking in the forward direction, then when reversing any clearance allows the pads or caliper to move in the opposite direction until they reach the limit of the available travel, hence the clunk.

Ok, thanks.

Hello athol,

Had same problem with my Fabia VRS, packed a bent small strip of metal over each top brake pad lug, bit of copper-based grease, in appropiate position, problem solved.

Nothing to hurt if nothing done, as informed already pads slapping up/down when braking forward or in reverse.
