VRS TDI PD 2008 Brake fluid change interval

Featured Replies

Folks,

Can you tell me what the service interval is for changing the brake fluid on a 2008 VRS TDI PD WITH 54000 Kilometers? Thanks.

Regards,

Bif

Normal brake fluid change interval is 2 years irrespective of mileage . The reason why the fluid needs changing is that it slowly absorbs water from the air and as such this is time time related not distance. As the fuid absorbs water then the boiling point of the fluid is lowered which for a braking fuid subject to braking friction heat is not good. If the fluid reaches boiling point during braking occurs then a condition called "vapour lock" can be gernerated causing brake seizure. Also failure to change fluid at the specified intervals can cause corrosion which will lead to seized brake pistons.

Thanks. The reason for the question is that one skoda service centre says it needs to be done and another skoda service says no....??? think I'll go with the guys who say it needs to be done...

I just had my 2008 serviced after 2 years (13000 miles). There was no mention of brake fluid. They did not say I needed it changed (although I know it suggests 2 years in the book). This was surprising as they usually try to extract as much as possible out of customers!. I'm not bothered though as 2 years is too soom IMHO. Brake fluid has always lasted years & the new specs are better than before but the interval that dealers want to change it is getting shorter. 18 months on a BMW!. Just a rip off if you ask me.

If you ever experience vapour lock you will change your mind. It happened to me many years ago. Never again .

Skoda recommend a 2-year change interval, although it is not formally part of the service schedule. If you can DIY its easy to do in about 20 minutes and takes about £5-worth of fluid.

Often the garage will do a fluid boiling point test and suggest a change if it below a certain threshold temperature.
