VRS Service

Featured Replies

Ok, the little INSP sign is showing on the display when i start the car now, so phoned up a local dealer to get the car booked in.

Got a bit of a shock when i was told that it needs a brake service and timing belt change. I was told that this is done every 4 years. Is this correct?

The car is a 56 plate VRS (TDi), and it's only done 23K ish miles.

Cheers

4 years or 60k mate it was revised from 80k

Yes, it needs doing. Don't skimp on this as it's fairly catastrophic if that belt fails. You may be thinking - it's only done 23,000 miles but the poor car has probably been started up and stressed by short journeys far more than a higher mileage car. Short journeys place a different kind of wear on the engine, but it's still being worn out just the same.

dont take any risks when the cambelt/tensioners are involved emoticon-0148-yes.gif

It's all in your service schedule book ...

Cam (timing) belt is every 4 years, or 60,000 miles, whichever happens first (this used to be 6 years, I think, but it was revised down by VW).

Brake fluid change is every 2 years, as its hydroscopic (absorbs air, making it compressible and reducing it's efficiency).

Hope that helps. :)

To be honest, I'm very surprised the INSP light is on as they should all be on fixed 10,000 mile interval service and as far as I know the INSP or little spanner doesn't come on on a vRS. I've certainly never seen it on mine.

Mines been on for 7000 miles :giggle:

Actually 15,000km or 12 months. You normally get a countdown in miles or days for a time before the INSP comes on. Since 15,000 km is only about 9,300 miles the spanner comes up early...

Bizarre - I've never seen this.

It's in the manual, but under the variable servicing section. Mine doesn't do this (it just comes up "INSP miles").

maybe it can be adjusted via the vag com [think thats what its called?] for vehicles that are on the variable servicing? just a thought emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

A Martinch has said, the belt use to be every 60K or even 80K miles. However rubber belts can fail through time so it is now 60K or every 4 years whichever comes first. If you are getting it done, VAG water pumps are prone to failing, so it is recommended (but not essential) that it is changed at the same time. I didn't get mine changed, but I will next time.

P.S. With VAG-Com, can you set the date when the service light comes on?

I know if it needs done then it should get done and it will, but just a bit of a shock.

Anyone know of a good independant garage in the Edinburgh area (Mid Lothian or West Lothian)

that could do this for me, main dealer phoned me back with a price and it was £473.

On a side note my display had been counting down from 1000 miles for the service indicator.

In four years,I'd not seen the spanner appear, but that was when I was doing 20k a year.In the last 12 months I've done 8k,and the spanner came on a year and a day after it was last serviced. It was serviced later that day by Dave at DSB Autocare in Bulwell,Nottingham.Top Service.Highly recommended.

My local Skoda dealer is pretty competitive on servicing - try them, West End Garage in Uphall (a few miles west of Edinburgh airport)

You can follow attached instructions for 'OIL' or 'INSP' warning light cancelling.

Attached fairly recent bill for 2005 Fabia VRS Camshaft +Auxcilliary belt +recommended water-pump+ G12 antifreeze renewed.

Brake components replacements you can carry out yourself, including 2 yearly DOT4 brake fluid change.

Loads of info on these areas on this site, do a recommended search around/ or ask.

Good-luck.
