Accelerating, rattle, and low power

Featured Replies

I've had a search around but can't find what I need, so I hope I'm not starting a common topic.

I have a 1.4mpi Classic. W reg.

> First off, there is a real rattle sound coming from the fan belt area of the car. Don't know if thats

linked to the main problem, which is the following:

> Cold starting and driving is fine, power seems normal.

> Once the engine is warm i start finding accelerating power is reduced, and if I'm coasting at a low 5-10mph

and put it into 2nd and accelerate, there can be a judder/knocking sound, and the power is really low, then picks up.

Even worse up a slope, and can even struggle in first if on a steep slope.....just really gutless. (Clutch is fine, only few

hundred miles on it, and this problem was there before the clutch change)

> Sometimes if I take it out of gear the revs can fall to a stall.

> Driving at a steady speed and holding the revs at say 2.5k, it can suddenly, describe it like a cough, a sudden loss of

power for a millisecond..

Any help would be very appreciated.

kind regards

Clean throttle body

Rattling could be the cam chain - they can get loser over time and rattle.

I'm havin the exact same problem. Wtf is it? Tha rattleing is the camchain. They get noisy but not too much to worry bout. As for the gutless feeling. I'm with you on that but wasnt sure wether it was the nature of the 8 valve.

Right, ok. I was thinking that might be worth doing. So why do you think it's ok when its cold, because the cold start valve is getting more fuel

through?

To be honest, I've always thought the car was under powered, but mate, this is more than just low bhp.

It's been friggin embarrasing pulling away with a line of traffic behind me. :S

It sounds like yours is more serious, but mines showing symptons. Is your head gasket good? Checked your oil filler cap? The engine might be losin compression through a dodgy gasket or something. Needs sorting and catching early. Let me know how it goes.

Managed to get the time to clean the throttle body out today. When I opened it up I was almost dissapointed too see how clean it was.

Cleaned what little build-up there was and as I expected, there's no change.

One thing I did notice though. Am I right in thinking that if I put the ignition on 2 and put the accelerator peddle down, the butterfly

in the throttle should have opened??? Because it didn't. Don't know if this means anything towards my problem.

Anyway, still the same. Absolutely fine on start-up and for the first few miles until the engine is warm. Once it's warm, its sluggish as hell.

For example, if I'm coasting at 25mph and put it into 3rd, or 10mph into 2nd, I get a judder and a real slow pick up. So I'm having to change

into gears so the revs are really high to get the power. Also puling away from stand still is painful.

Any other suggestions are most welcome.
