Air Con oddness

Featured Replies

Simple... air con the other day, seemed to not be cold during the hottest period of the year. blowing, perhaps cooler, but not cold. Soooo, off for a regass, had that done, got back, still something not right. While in the engine bay, realise the fans weren't running. fiddle around for a bit, fans are now running. change pollen filter, all good. Now here's the oddness. Sometimes, I'll get cold air while stationary. And I DEFINATELY get cold air, and I mean proper cold (considering the outside temps especially!) at speed. sometimes though when at lower speeds, it sort of.... goes a bit limp. It's still cool, but not cold. Bit of revs and speed, and it's back to arctic..... is there a belt somewhere?

heard on a dutch forum that this is a comon problem. He experianced the same issue. While driving no problem, but when stationary (ie traffic jam) the coolness drops.

The dealer finds no errors or anything wrong and says this is the way it supposed to work.

While i am not (yet) a skoda driver. A have driven with Airco and climate control for 8 years now. And never experianced this behaviour. In my opinion it is not normal and should be fixed.

Hope you find out what is wrong.

or more importantly hope i don't have the same issue :|

Mine doesn't do this, so on that basis, I wouldn't expect yours to!

It does still work fine while stationary....... and at speed. But occasionally it does kinda go weak. I'm imagining that at speed, the airspeed is enough to keep it cool, and at low speed it's fine. One thing makes me ask if there is a belt is there's no noticable drop in revs when I engage the aircon. But I've NEVER noticed a drop in revs, even when it used to work just fine -- at least I never noticed anything before, but it's not really been this hot before!

I would speak to the dealer personally, there are a pair of huge fans on the back of the radiators, both electrically driven, so I doubt that they would be a problem.

On the other hand, air con pump failure is common on the Octavia, so if it is still in warranty, keep a close eye on it.

Yes, I found those fans, they are working (they may not have been, definately are now). Again I'll mention the belt though. Since it seems to be linked to speed or power output somewhat HOW is this pump driven? Anyone know?

The Air-con compressor is belt driven from the engine

This can happen if there is a build up of ice on the aircon radiator which has to defrost before the you get airflow through it restored. Can happen if you have been travelling at speed and then slow in traffic as the airflow reduces so much that the refrigerant can freeze the air flowing through the rad, especially so in the current humid air we have.

That why you sometimes see a small pool of water under the car after parking up when the aircon has been working hard - the ice melts flows down the drain pipe, often mistaken for a coolant leak

It is on the alternator belt, the air con pump is the one just below the alternator (on mine at least)

Sorry, you did ask, I just didnt read it properly
