For comparison on my 140CR estate with 2k on the clock -

Yesterday I did a triangular trip, picking up a planspotting friend for a day out before he checked in for a residential course. Left Huntingdon area to Heathrow at 60mph sometimes 50 / 40 due to speed limits, got 66mpg over 90 miles to that point. Picked up to 65-70mph ish apart from round Brum at 50 to go to Cosford air museum, was reading 63mpg on arrival.

On the M6/A14 run from Cosford to Cambridge, then back to Huntingdon with stop-start round Brum, all at 70, still got to 63mpg.

Short 10 mile local runs on back roads, ie not actually getting into 6th, still gets me 55mpg. Steady 60 over 90 miles dual roads economy run gets 70mpg.

Incidentally, Cosford Air Museum were hosting the AGM of the Oxford and Cambridge owners club. A dazzling lineup of 20+ chrome plated cars parked between the hangars... I dont think there would be enough space for a Briskoda gathering...

Had car checked by Station Garage in Ewhurst (brilliant Skoda dealer) in June at 3000 miles - nowt wrong they say...

Today, at just on 7000 miles, I did a return trip of about 60 miles along flattish country roads, with not many gradients or sharp bends. Managed to get 49mpg by being VERY light on the throttle and using engine revs between about 1400 and 1800. On a main road trip, cruising at about 75 it still only gives me 44-45mpg, so I feel another trip to the dealer is called for.

As I go to Scotland from Surrey a couple times in the year an improvement would be very welcome. Currently I calculate that it is costing me about £40 more each time compared with my older PD version, taking into account the rather significant difference in the fuel price over the years.

Has ANYONE had fuel consumption as low as mine?

But it s such a nice car, so much more refined than my old PD version (which always did 55+ mpg).

My CR vRS had very, very poor fuel economy (~30MPG) as the EGR/DPF system was broken. Eventually replaced under warranty.

Now I get around 550 miles per tank, so around 47MPG, but I don't generally drive for maximum economy.

Apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs (but this could help other people) but the only way to get a true measure of fuel economy is to measure miles done on a full tank, the trip computer isn't accurate enough.

Fill the tank right to the top, zero the trip counter, when you refill divide miles driven by the amount of fuel you just put in. This gives you accurate fuel economy for that tank, repeat a few times to get a solid average.

Going from a baby 3 cylinder PD to a 140 CR I can tell you I did not expect it to be this quiet! The shove from the PD is gone yes, and the CR very linear, but boy does it actually go! Love it. Especially with the DSG. From inside or out it really does not sound like a deseasel. And here is why:

The common rail system has one pump priming the common rail with each injector opening off of the common rail injecting into the engine. The pumpe duse system has four pumps each driven by the camshaft, one behind each injector. It’s probably these four pumps mechanically driven that create the racket.

The common rail system is fully electronic so the diesel can be pumped when necessary, even multiple times per stroke of the piston. The pumpe duse system is linked to the timing of the camshaft so in essence is identical to the old mechanical injection pump systems of old but this time divided into four small systems, one per cylinder.

I've done 28000 miles on my CR TDI vRS now and the engine is sublime - seems to get better the more it wears in. It's infinitely smoother and quieter that the diesel Mondeo I had previously, and that was common rail as well! The only diesel I've driven that compares is my son's Volvo S60 D5 and I put that down to it having 5 cylinders, also a cracking good engine.

I don't miss the all or nothing of my old PD140 Octavia. Yes it felt fast, but in reality it wasn't very fast.

My Snow Monster with the CR engine is sooooooo much better, linear acceleration, no wheels spin stopped by the asr any more. Just forward propulsion!

It isn't as economical though. The PD was averaging 45-50mpg, whereas the 3300 mile CR140 is averaging about 37mpg. But the aerodynamics are rather brick like! Need to keep speed to 70mph max, preferably less to get the best out of it.

Both had/have DSG. The new 'box is soooo much better than the one in my 100,000 mile Octavia.

... or use fuelly? It works it all out for you and gives pretty graphs!

I have noticed that the onboard indicated mpg is all over the place - on the next to last tank full it indicated 57.1mpg (trip2 was reset when I filled up), fuelly came in slightly lower at 56.3. On the next tankful (I didn't reset trip2 this time) the indicated mpg on average across both tanks had increased to 57.7, but according to fuelly I had a lower mpg on that tankful at 52.9!

I know that you will get a slightly different amount in each time you fill up, but it should be within a couple of litres on a 55L tank.

Most I have ever had out of a tank was 608 miles, the warning light had come on that point.

If the computer is to believed I would have got approx 660 out of the last two tanks if I had gone all the way down to empty. Both fillups were done at approx 1/4 tank.

One thing I have noticed is that the fuel economy dropped to the 40mpg region in the cold snap, which also coincided with the Shark remap, hence why 650 miles out of a tank seems a reality now.

I have a 2005 1.9 PD estate which I use on a 100 mile round trip commute.Mosty of it is motorway although a few trips are through town.

I do drive very carefully and I am the annoying one on the inside lane with the lorries doing 50 ish.

I manage to average 68MPG using the brim to brim method to calculate. Trip says I am doing 75mpg average. I get nearly 700 miles to a tank till the light comes on

I've seen many comments to that effect, but when I've calculated full tank consumption the display reading has only been about 2% optimistic, which I reckon is close enough for most purposes.

What I was meaning is that some people will seize on the highest number they've ever seen and report that as their fuel economy.

Just because they managed 65MPG for 10minutes one Thursday in June doesn't mean it's the normal 'on a run' economy :)

My trip computer 'memory 2' now has >4000miles on it and fuel economy matches my brim-to-brim measure close enough too.

I should add that I only did brim-to-brim measurements as my car was reporting 55MPG but doing 30. Now it's fixed I don't worry about it!

My trip computer 2 was reading 51/52 mpg (got 54 one one tankful) yet the actual consumption is around 47mpg, so almost 10% out.

I have since changed the setting with VCDS to improve the accuracy, it may be a bit of trial and error to get it spot on.

I'm getting just over 48mpg at present with my PD140 (full tank to full tank) ,but in the summer time I got about 50mpg. This is on my 24 mile cross country commute and long motorway runs. Well short of the official mpg. The trip thingy is never out by more than 1 mpg BTW.

I note that the current VW Passat SE Estate CR140 (6 speed manual) gets 58mpg in the Autocar 'touring' test - I think the best consumption for any car tested recently.

I only pay £125 road tax for my PD140 so is the CR Octavia actually free? :wonder:
