Changing Gearbox Oil?

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

I did my own service in Feb, made a thread on it and other things, I didnt do the gearbox oil tho. iirc its in the shedule to be done on every longlife service is it not? I am coming up to do another service already as my comute to Bristol from Cardiff is 45mile each way and thats 5-6 times a week. this time I will be doing the gearbox but would like some info on it please.

What tools are needed? to remove the plugs?

Is there a filter of some kind?

what oil is needed?

I only have 2 stands so the car wont be level when I do the filling, will it cause damage if I put a tad too much in?

Also on a diff note, Ive started to notice a damp smell from the air con when you first turn it on, how can I sort it out? also gonna do the pollen filter this time too

cheers

billy

I changed mine last service,i used genuine skoda gearbox oil from local dealer,it wasnt that expensive, only special tool you will need is a hex tool to remove drain & fill plugs.Remember to remove level/fill plug first before you undo drain plug. You will need car to be level when you fill it with new oil, mine took just under 2 litres before it started to run out of level/fill hole.Easy job that shouldnt take more than half hour start to finish.

All the details you need are in here Billy: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/153317-bodges-super-special-service-weekend/page__p__1903317__fromsearch__1entry1903317

17mm male hex socket for the drain/fill plugs, and a decent breaker bar to make it easy.

Genuine VAG gearbox fluid (75W90). I paid about £8.50 for 2 litres. They come in 1 litre bottles, and you'll need to get 2.

No filter, and it's super easy.

Just don't drink the old fluid!

I used a suitable sized nut and bolt welded together as I did not have the appropriate hex tool, and then just used a normal socket on it. Cheap, but effective :giggle:

As mentioned above, check you can undo the "filler" hole before actually draining the box.

this is the oil you need to ask for

GO60 726 A2

about £5 a litre - as said you'll need two bottles

just got mine on saturday and going to change it too.

A new pollen filter might fix a smelly aircon. You could also stick a disinfectant spray through it when the filter's out.
