After half day of faffing around I present to you.. 312mm brakes :P

Featured Replies

Well, as per title, nothing fallen off or exploded after a 40 min drive about..

I've never touched brakes in my life and didnt really understand how they work until v recently by going on forums and power of internet videos..! Now after some fiddling I think I get the jist of it.. Im suprised how loosely the pads are held in though.. (for 288 or 312mm).

Brakes are a tad spongy to my liking still but I wouldnt say it was worse than before, assuming its not been bedded in. Attempted to make the abs come on.. I er.. couldn't :wonder: I had few goes standing on the brakes (deserted road) but tyres wouldn't slip lol.. so I assume braking power is good enough..!

:giggle: I was making the most of the old pads/discs last weekend......

ah, you'll regret not cleaning the wheels, when you realise NOTHING fits in the gap between the caliper and the wheel!

Regarding the sponginess, I presume you changed the brake fluid at the same time?

Looking good though, and worthwhile too - i wouldn't change mine for the world!

Lol, thanks, I'll bare that in mind, speaking of fluid change.. I bought the eezibled thing and its absolutely poo (or I dont know how to use it). It just kept filling the tank up until spillage. I assume I had an air leak where I screw the cap on, but after some fiddling it still no joy..! So I had a full tank of brake fluid and had to drain it out the old fashion way of pumping the brakes and opening the nipple :dull: not fun..

I may have too much brake fluid in the car still, is that a problem?

Hmm would of thought bigger brakes = more abs! Mine kicks in from time to time, felt it kick in today when some d*ck in a crx decided he wanted both lanes

looking good tho! How come the one pic the wheel has a green pinstripe? Am i missing something B)

hmm, i made use of an eezi-bleed (i say me, i mean a colleague  ) and all went fine - did you have the pressure in the tyre low enough? around 15psi is advised.

I'm not sure if too much brae fluid would be an issue, however if you fear you may have air in the system i'd suggest giving it another bleed.

Have you noticed any difference at all vs the OEM? i know I certainly did, kept pulling up 15ft short of junctions.... :giggle:

phantomlurker - Oh! The instructions says no more than 20psi, so.. I put 20psi.. :giggle: , it did empty the liquid fairly quickly I must say..!

as for differences, think i'll have to let the pads bed in before making final judgements as I've never had a go at non bedded in 288mm brakes. It seems better from initial impressions though..! Feels tad more positive braking compared to before (tho it could be fluid change)

It was a pic from one of the 1st week I had the car, the sticker strips fell off after a good blast of the pressure washer :(. didn't actually take a before pic today...............

I will attempt the abs test later, but I have to figure out how to not get my face planted onto the dash when testing.. :p

Looking great mate. Brakes should get better with time. My got better after 150+ miles.

yeah, to be fair I think my old OEM must have been shot, the difference was huge.

Might be worth finding an empty stretch of nsl or motorway, and do some rapid stops, down to about 10mph. do a few of these, and should be coming along nicely on the bedding process.

Out of interest, are the pads and discs OEM 312, or have you further uprated?

cheers

My discs were originals I think, had advisory from the MOT place so I thought I might as-well change them, better than waiting till winter to find out I have none left..!

Yeah this time round is oem mintex disc/pads, I'll try diff pads next time. One step at a time

Have you got uprated ones?

nope, nothing uprated (well, other than overall!) just have standard 312mm discs and pads.

you are right - if you've got an advisory, thats the right time to do it, esp as a home-done upgrade will cost less than new pads and discs all round done at a garage!

hope youu have fun bedding them in, you'll have the ABS on in no time!

Get some jet seal 109 on those wheels :)

Good job on the brakes. :)

Thanks for the comment guys, just drove the car again today and found mpg dropped by about 10, guess the pads are rubbing. Is this bad? Do I need to readjust them?

To add.. when lifting brake it doesn't spring back up as quick as I thought it would.. what could cause this?

Edited by JLneonhug

hmm, that doesn't sound right - but may be connected to having too much fluid or maybe having some air in the system. i'm not sure, i think i've found the boundary of my brake knowledge!

hopefully someone else will jump in to shed further light...

had a little chat with my colleague today about this problem - his response was that with the mpg drop obviously the brakes are binding; probably requires the piston to be wound back slightly further in the caliper. He did wonder whether this may have caused the fluid to boil and that this may be leading to the lack of a return action on the pedal.

Not much use I guess, but i think thats me tapped out!

hmm.. Interesting.. Thanks for the dig around :)

I went for a long drive today (90 mile trip round the m25), I think its gotten a little better, mpg was slightly under usual but not as bad as yesterday.. brakes are sensitive on the motorway lol. dunno will have a fill up and drive some more tomorrow, will keep updated.
