Mot

Featured Replies

Hi People, My furby has her first MOT in my ownership today..Good news she passed but with a couple of advisories just after some advice on the following.

01 - Brakes : RBT Front Brake Imbalance ; 19% Front brakes only just me the front brake imbalance requirements. It would appear the braking system requires adjustment or repair- WHAT DOES THIS MEAN?LOL Any parts i may need? Prices?. Iv got a mechanic friend who I am seeing at the weekend about everything but just wanted a heads up on price and things

02 - Windscreen has a crack less than 40mm circle outside zone A - i will be ringing my insurance about this tomorow to try and get it done for free so thats ok (Though the crack has been on the car since I have had it and passed its last MOT with it)

03- O/S/F Brake disc slightly worn - Cheap fix i assume

04 - N/S/R Shocker plastic insert broken - No idea about this but Im guessing this explains a little bit of knocking iv been having? Is this a big job?, Heard i may need a whole new shocker? Prices?

thanks for your time as you have more than likely guess I know very little about cars so any advice would be great

Thanks

Brendan

Iv got a mechanic friend who I am seeing at the weekend about everything but just wanted a heads up on price and things - the limit is %25. you will probs be best just taking pads out and give everything good clean and make sure nothing is sticking in.

03- O/S/F Brake disc slightly worn - Cheap fix i assume just give it clean up and knock any rust from around the lip

04 - N/S/R Shocker plastic insert broken - No idea about this but Im guessing this explains a little bit of knocking iv been having? Is this a big job?, Heard i may need a whole new shocker? Prices?

thats a new one to me lol - maybe garage just after some work? :S

thanks for your time as you have more than likely guess I know very little about cars so any advice would be great

"03" maybe the calliper is seized and is causing the brake unbalance as well as being more worn that the other side

"04" yes I know what you mean, my wife's Polo has that problem and so I've bought new bump stops, nuts and bolts to sort this out - this alone does not mean you need new shockers - only new bump stops. This is a very well known failure it seems and does create a bit of knocking as you said - have a look, if you can see the shiny shocker rod then thelower bit of the bump stop has broken off and the protective plastic pipe has dropped down as its attached to the end of the bump stop.

03 - have both discs and pads replaced IMO, while making sure to check the caliper piston and sliding pins are working properly. I wouldn't put it off, I had the same with brake imbalance on another car, g clamped the piston then applied the brakes a few times and MOT tester didn't mention it when it went in for retest. Not long after had a bit of a brown pants moment when I needed to emergency stop. Stripped it down and found the sliding pin had seized on one side.

If it's the first mot, and well timed, meaning its still under warranty, ask the stealers about getting some of it at least done under warranty? Although knowing SUK they will say NO!

Probably most comes under wear and tear sadly.

Yeah, brake discs aren't very expensive (about £20+VAT trade for OEM ones), and are relatively easy to replace on the front. I'd check to see if it needs doing, though - my car's previous owner was told their discs were worn by the garage that serviced/MOT'd it (sheet said >10k miles left), next MOT they weren't mentioned at all. When I replaced them (having gone on the previous MOT), there was nothing wrong with them.

Is that the stoneguard tube that sits over the shock absorber? If so, it's about £6 (note: it may be bouncing around because the rubber bump stop it's attached to has perished instead - part number is here). :) It is a bit of a pain to do, because it's a wheel off, wheelarch guard out, shock absorber out and slightly dismantled (there's a bit of plastic at the top you have to remove), job (about an hour).

04 - I fixed this with an inch of 22mm pipe insulation foam, it's passed an MOT with this on both sides.
