Stuart, they say the Est. handles better than the hatch, something to do with the hatch having to carry extra weight to balance it.

It could also be to do with the estate having extra weight over the rear axle, should be a better balanced chassis than the hatch.

Estates are usually quicker in a straight line as the aerodynamics are better, if you are old enough you may remember the Volvo estates that ran rather well in the touring car series chosen for just that reason

This is 25kg over the rear axle somewhere, but does anyone know exactly where it is? How would this be affected by the choice of spare wheel - temporary, full-size or none at all? I am sure I could find 25kg of useful 'stuff' to bolt down to the boot floor rather than 25kg of dead weight.. And how is this extra weight requirement affected by the (sloshing) contents of the fuel tank.

The Estate has more metal at the back in the upper body hence more weight over the axle.

Clear. The question was where exactly is the 25kg weight added to the hatch.

I remember the days. Wasn't the estate original built by accident though?

I thought TWR built the car for Volvo & was deemed more aerodynamic but they reverted to a saloon when the rules allowed the addition of spoilers etc
