Buzzing from under the center vents

Featured Replies

Hi, over the last couple of weeks I've noticed a buzzing noise at certain revs and also sometimes on rough road surfaces. The noise sound like its eminating from under the center vents in the dash. I've pushed and proded but to no avail, I'va also had everything out of the glovebox and the sunglass holder. My question is, how do I remove the center vents from the dash ? Many thanks

Remove the centre console trim (gently prise from the bottom) and then it's a doddle to remove the vents

There's loads of space behind the dash around that area so it's very probably that there could be something rattling around.

You need to get a blunt flat instrument and prise the unit out from underneath. The clips holding it in require quite a lot of force to shift.

You can see here where the clip locations are, there's just three of them along the bottom to lever up:

Thanks for your replies, so is it a case of removing the surround and then you can see the clips through the cutouts above the stereo ?

Just had mine diagnosed by Savilles of Kidderminster as a vibrating ECU fitted inside the engine bay. The unit was "packed out" and re secured to the bulk head.

The rattle appears to have disappeared.

No, the outer part is an integral part of the unit, there is no separate surround around the vents, not sure what Raglits meant by that, it's all one piece. You can see from this pic I took at the weekend how it comes out:

(I did remove the stereo surround as I was removing the stereo, but you don't need to if you're just taking out the vents)

I removed the centre console the only time I removed the vents too (when "hard wiring" my sat nav) and my ageing memory thought you needed to remove the trim to get the vents off too...

Might as well carry on killing the brain cells with beer tonight, I'm obviously past saving now emoticon-0102-bigsmile.gif

I had buzzing which seems to come from the centre vents and it turned out to be the rear view mirror assembly. If you held it (the mirror that is), the buzz disappeared. It plagued me for 3 years because I couldn't think what to do. Putting an elastic band round the mirror helped a bit (but there was always an elastic band in my view!)
