SMF What rattles ?

Featured Replies

Been reading posts about the SMF conversion and noticed people say the flywheel is what makes the rattling noise.

How can this be as a Flywheel is a piece of solid steel and it is bolted to the crank ?

I don't understand how it could make a rattling noise.

Could anyone explain what the rattle noise is ?

Thanks

I think its more the vibrations through the car causing rattles than the smf itself rattling due to there being no springs like in a dmf to soften them out

Unless you mean the rattling from the stock dmfs?

I need to make a quick decision on what clutch to get and was searching the forum on SMF conversions.

The main down side to a SMF (apart from cost) seems to be the noise when the engine is idling and foot off the clutch pedal, that is what I could not understand as the comments from the threads about SMF say the flywheel makes the rattling noise at idle.

A solid piece of steel cannot make a rattling noise !

You can get the Smf's in different weights, The lighter you go, the more rattly noises you get on idle with the clutch up ( As such, Not depressed )

The heavier the Smf the less noise you get, It is more of a diesel chatter due to the Gears Etc rattling under no load/lighter load than normal, Use a heavier Smf & this does the trick...

There are a few posts on here about the Kits & weights available.

Thanks for the replies :)

Yes I have noticed that the heavier SMF helps to stop the rattle noise but the SMF for the 6spd gearbox only seems to have a very light one at 6.25 Kg, well looking at the Jabba website they only list a 6.25 Kg one.

The more I read about the DMF the more I fancy a SMF, to buy a new DMF and the Sachs uprated clutch kit is not much cheaper than a SMF kit !!!

Helix and smf is the only one you want!!

Go straight past sachs and you'll not go wrong

They havent been banging helixs in rally cars for years for nothing

I thought the Helix rattles worse than the Sachs SMF going by the SMF threads ?

its the flywheel tha causes the rattle...not the make of clutch..

I was told that it was the other way around

Anyways helix gets my vote :8
