Damaged windscreen

Featured Replies

Hi all

I hate to bring up a negative issue, since their are a few other old threads concerning this problem, but just wondering if any one else has encountered another cracked windscreen?

I had a small chip which I could live with, I thought that was just bad luck. Then, the other day a big 10 inch crack appeared from the bottom of the passenger side, away from the chip. Looked at the other posts older threads and a few others have had a cracked screens - maybe 5 or 6. The question is are these just a normal number of incidents or is the Yeti prone to this? A new screen is no big deal, a bit inconvenient and a good few quid, but it's more of a pain if they are fitted badly and bring any new problems.

Does anyone know if these cracks are happening as often to other cars - is this something Skoda and the screen makers should be looking into on the Yeti? is it really the bad roads since winter and the cheapo way councils are fixing them?

Maybe if the Car or Top Gear magazine in house cars get a damaged screen Skoda will take note. I suppose should tell them anyway.

Other than this and a few minor gripes - a squeak from the dash and a bit of useless boot trip has fallen off, stitching on seat needs attention, I get reasonable mpg and mph for a car of this class. It's still fun to drive and useful for carrying people and stuff with a bit of style, what more do you want? I suppose I want a windscreen that doesn't need replacing every 3000 miles. Cross fingers that the next one lasts longer.

Yeah Macdemon,

I suppose as a 'Mac person' you think all windows are the devils work. I agree with you - in regard to computers, mind you, I've got a small problem with my new 27" iMac screen too, warm cast along the bottom, though no big crack... yet!

The screen shouldn't have a cast along the bottom :dull:

Is it there all the time even when cold?? or does it develop over a few mins hours as the unit warms up??

Where did you get it from??

Are windscreens covered under warranty ???

No it shouldn't.

It's been acknowledged by Apple as a problem that a few 27" iMacs have had, it's very subtle and you can just see it when the background is white. They are not helpful now it's well known and the only thing they say is 'have you had a OS update' or a iMac update which makes no difference. Maybe their will be one that works now.

My problem is that it would not be a repair, but a new machine and I would have to move all my stuff over. It's not bad enough really, though it is an annoyance when you buy a new thing. When I've got it into my 'office' it'll be hooked up to a big apple display as well which is probably better.

I only saw it when I read about it in a Mac Magazine, so it's not that noticeable, shame though.

Will look at that, if it's a crack and not a chip maybe. Will ring them on Monday.

I got it from Apple direct, noticed it after the return period so they got a bit unhelpful. It's no difference when cold or warmed up, so maybe a software issue?

You have a 1 year warranty with the comp.

If you have Time Machine, then make a back-up and contact apple and insist on a replacement or repair. (make sure its not a long protracted repair either.

I have the 24" iMac and thats as good as gold :D

I don't have time machine, yet, not seen the need for it, though it's a fantastic concept and seems to work for friends of mine. I can back up what I have the normal way. Yes, I know I should get serious as it's not right. Will do it when I can spare the machine.

On another thread I see you have the iphone4, that's the next thing on my want list, well above the ipad for me. I was / am disappointed that Apple wont let you tether with bluetooth the new or old phones to the ipad to enable internet access, so as to make you buy the expensive 3G option. I was hoping I would be able to slot the mini sim card into the pad form the phone but apparently O2 or Orange will get snotty and block your account. So I think I'll keep using the Macbook until an app comes out that improves on all this... some hope.

Have you connected your phone to the Yeti yet? R

The iPhone 4 SIM is not compatible with the iPad and vise versa :dull:

Not got my Yeti yet

GETTING BACK ON THREAD.

My local windscreen company says they are very busy at the moment, and have been since the winter ended. He is mostly dealing wity stone chips from broken tarmac/potholes, and says that if the are not caught quickly chips soon develop into cracks.

With modern cars where the screen is bonded into the body, the glass becomes structural, so is under pressure almost continuously. It isn't just Skodas, so stop worrying.

Thanks for that info. Some comfort indeed.

In 33 years of motoring, 10 cars, I've had 6 windows replaced, 2 broken deliberately, 2 inc the Yeti, in the last 5 months. Probably unlucky - as you say. I think that as you point out, as they are bonded, any flex in the car, change in temp, can affect it enough.

i tend to drop back from the car in front now, due to the roads current state'...my focus is the first car in many years that i havnt had to replace the screen due to dropping back more
