Sony Xperia x10 OR Samsung Galaxy S whats the better phone

Featured Replies

After 5 years of having the same phone feel like a change and cant decide on if to get the Sony Experia X10 or the Samsung Galaxy S the sony seems to have the better camera but has the 1.6 andriod operating system. The samsung has the latest android operating system but only a 5 Megapixel camera.

Just wondered if any of you guys have one of these phones and what would be the one to get as i will prob be keeping whatever I choose for another 5 years.

I was considering the Iphone 4 but cant find one as they are all out of stock (apple must do this for marketing reasons) everytime a new iphone comes out they never seem to make enough to supply the demand.

Cheers

HTC desire

failing that, the samsung... which is actually more powerful than the desire.

Heard some horrid things about the Xperia - nothing specific, but lots of people ditching it and buying a Desire instead. It's running 1.6 too, which is light years behind 2.1 on the Desire and all you hear are SE's promised to update it to 2.1/ 2.2.......yeah right, they'll just bring out a new phone with it on and screw all the Xperia owners. Also, even though SE are renowned for doing good mobile cameras, a 5mp on a Samsung will be nigh on as good - more MP does not equate to a better photo, just a bigger one. The 5mp on my Desire takes surprisingly good photos and the flash is blindingly bright for a single LED. Had an 8mp on my Samsung Omnia HD and the camera sucked a55.......endless blurring unless you were in bright sunshine, so indoor photos were a waste of time. The 5mp on my Nokia N85 mopped the floor with it.

Just been reading too - no camera light on the Samsung? is that true? Ugh....they NEED an led flash, even thought it's not the same as a xenon one, it more than helps in low light. A phone without one is useless indoors otherwise and just creates noisy photos with high ISO. My iPhone 3GS did - ok outdoors, poor indoors whereas the Desire copes perfectly fine.

The screen on the Samsung looks lovely and AMOLED outdoors sucks as you can't see it in direct sunlight, at all. Super AMOLED is meant to fix all that, but the lack of a flash would be a deal breaker to me.....and the fact it's Samsung who are renowned for leaving current owners in the cold when it comes to updates and support, instead favouring new phone releases. Agan, I'd get the Desire. HTC at least do provide some support, not much but way better than Samsung.

In terms of all this compared to iPhone 4, it depends what you want out of a phone. I had a 3GS before getting the Desire and I do miss certain aspects, mainly around the UI as it was so well polished, but i don't miss the locked down-ness of it all, no bluetooth file transfer and crummy picture gallery where it just lists everything and you can't organise by anything, like date etc. Also try looking up EXIF data on a photo you took.....you need to rig it to USB to do that. Then there's tethering.....only if you buy a nice pricey bolt on if you're on O2. Had a play with an iPhone 4 at work.....felt just like my 3GS with IOS 4 on, just with a different body. I bet the camera is better etc but it's still very sparse with options such as no contrast/ sharpness/ saturation settings etc.

If you want a (very) simple yet beautifully well wrapped package and also the 'cool' factor then get the iPhone. If you want to do practically anything with it, are prepared for people to go "eh?" when you tell them you have an Android phone (although that is changing) and are prepared to sacrifice usability a little in favour of waaaay more features, and for less money than the iPhone then i strongly recommend an Android phone like the Desire. Avoid the Xperia, and the Samsung seems like they've cut a few corners, plus Samsung themselves are rubbish.

Out of the 2, Samsung S. Sony have placed a horrid UI and crippled a great spec by locking it to 1.6 with no date on an update to 2.1.

some good tips there guys, funny enough when i phoned my provider they were saying the HTC Desire is the most popular handset on the market at this time, they said everytime it comes into stock its out of stock within hours.

But HTC (never heard of the brand) where have they come from they seem to have come from out of the blue but looking at the specs of the desire they are very good, I tried an IPhone today and thought the camera quality was poor.

I am leading towards the htc desire (when it comes back in stock on the 16th july)

I'd say go with the Desire.

I've got the original Galaxy - and have had it from release day. Samsung have completly dropped all support for it, and are basically refusing to acknowledge disgruntled users.

Considering this was released as a flagship phone, and for Samsung to then basically ignore the fact that it exists a few months later is frankly ****! I wouldn't be surprised if they didn't so the same with the Galaxy S.

HTC have been around ages, building smartphones before anyone else.. although re-branded winmo stuff.. XDA/vario etc.

My first HTC device was branded Compaq and was an iPaq bought in 2000. They then started making Windows Mobile phones and have been making phones for at least 8 years now. The hardware is generally pretty good, shame that most of them were crippled by having Windows Mobile on them emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

The first Android phones were made by HTC and it's only the last few months that the other manufacturers have started building Android phones.

Mine is the i7500

Samsung haven't even released 1.6 in the UK yet, and it doesn't look like they ever will. Luckily a developer is working on getting 2.x working, however it's very buggy, and probably won't ever be 100%.
