rear suspension boot

Featured Replies

I've just been checking over my rear suspension as I've noticed occasional knocking when going over bumps. I noticed that on the drivers side rear wheel the bottom of the boot seems to have corroded and the plastic tube which would normally attach to the bottom has come off, exposing the shock itself, is this a problem that should be looked at or something that's just cosmetic (or as cosmetic as suspension can be?!)

Cheers

Lou

It's the bumpstop thats nackered and will need replacing yes

I did both mine a couple of weeks back and was pretty easy to do :)

Thanks Richard, what problems could a shot bumpstop cause?

MoT failure for a start, I think...

Although, realistically, all the rubber is still there - it's just split. So from the point of view of the job it does, the car should still be safe. They went on my wife's car, and it's not too hard a DIY job, provided you have a workbench, as you need to take the damper off the car and get the top mount off the end of it with a ring spanner and some grips.

The foamy thing ("buffer" VW call it) at the top of mine perished on both sides, causing the stoneguard to bounce up and down. If that's what's happened to yours, you need to remove the shock absorber to replace it and refit the stoneguard (the stoneguard screws onto the end of the buffer).

This might help (thread I posted when I did mine, with part numbers):

Or are you talking about something at the bottom of the shock absorber and I've misunderstood?
