Basically having a few problems when we start the car up. stick the key in the ignition and basically the engine rattles vigourously and struggles to start.

to me it sounds like it could be a broken starter motor. does anyone have any ideas what it could be?

Just for clarity there are two versions of the 1.4. The MPI (8v) and the 16v. Which is yours?

It sounds like a misfire to me perhaps. Do you have any engine management lights on the dash? Perhaps you can get it checked over for error codes? Other things are just to check that the fluids and filters are ok, there are no loose connections and perhaps take each spark plug out in turn to check general engine health. Is the battery old?

It has got a management light up every now and then, codes have been read and it came back with temp sensor which has since been replaced. :S

It is unlikely that the Starter moter is broken. The rattle is probabaly the starter solenoid Full battrey voltage may not be reaching the Solenoid So the Ignition switch and the cables from the battery to the starter are the first places to check
