Upgrading radio in vRS and speakers

Featured Replies

Greetings.

I have purchased a new kenwood CD/receiver that incorporates blue tooth for my mobile phone. I have checked my handbook and I note that the old 'Symphony' unit had an out put of about 20 watts per channel. My new kenwood is about 50 watts per channel.

Any teccies out there please who can advise if my speakers will be OK with the upgrade and handle it. (I do not intend on blowing my ear drums, really simply wanted a few more features like linking i pod and phone)

In the hand book there is nothing about the speakers which come with the car ?

I had a browse on the forum and have I seen a few posts about changing speakers, but before I do this hopefully stock will be OK ?

Any obsevations thanks

4 x 45w on my old Sony was fine. Not sure what I've got at the minute, but can look for you?

Should be fine though - will be a big upgrade in sound quality too, standard speakers aren't too bad if you fiddle with the EQ/balance settings.

*Edit*

http://www.dooyoo.co...oneer-deh-50ub/ - that's what I've got now, 4 x 50w - worked well in my Fabia, and equally well in the Polo too - shouldn't have any issues with the Kenwood.

Biggest issue I had was resonating, rather than the speakers not coping (for the volumes I wanted anyway) - but much like you, I don't have it loud, just loud enough to be audible.

The standard speakers in mine are mated to a top end Alpine headunit, rated at 50w per channel. I have suffered no problems at all.

They are actually quite good speakers, and handle most frequencies pretty well. I would fit your headunit, and see how the standard ones sound to you. No need to change unless they are blown really.

Thanks for the replies, good news  The other point is I saw on another posting that you can buy a univeral facia cover for after market radio c/d from Skoda for 2.99. Ordered one from halfords at 5.99 !

Think I might give my stealers a call Monday !!

The one from the dealer clips directly onto the dash, whereas the Halfords / Autoleads one has a loop of plastic that goes around the whole HU, and it's not a particularly good fit or colour match IME. If you've not opened the packet on the Halfords one, I'd get a refund - and even if you have, I'd say it's borderline "not fit for purpose intended" TBH.

I have an Octy HU in my car (don't ask!) and there have been no problems with the speakers, althought the sound quality it much improved. One advantage of single-DIN is that you can put the HU in the bottom slot and get a Polo cupholder to go in the top slot, out of the way of the gearstick, if you want...

Can I ask what head unit you used ? - Would be good to get one that has been tested with OEM speakers.

cheers

Remember watts don't kill speakers, distortion does. Another thing to point out is the rated watts is the max figure not the rms figure.

I've had 100watts rms going through the front oem speakers in the past. You'll be fine. :)

Thanks ap0gee That seems a good idea ! I know a guy who works in a parts dept at a V W dealer !! Have you got a photo of your HU set up !!

Not meaning to hijack the thread, but I can hear my passenger door speaker vibrating. I think this is just the cover on it, has anyone else had this problem or know how to solve it?

It will be the rivets in the plate that mount the speaker - mine rattled too.

Take off panel - drill out rivet - replace with nut and bolt - sorted

Its an Alpine IDA-X001, however there are newer ones than this now, personally I think the best looking that would suit the fabia would be the IDA-X100, but thats an older unit as well. The electronics in these units makes even the crappy Ipod quality sound good for everyday use! However if you want to run CD's you will need a CD changer, as there is no slot in the headunit.

Heres mine;

I WANT I WANT I WANT I WANT one of those cupholder thingies!!

where oh where can i get the details from to get one? i just cant find any info on it at all!

(i'm a big believer in cup holders, you see)

Came as standard in the Polos I think. Just ask at a VW dealership, although I'm not sure if it's a 9n or 6n2 Polo you'll want it from. I've one in mine, came as standard, and I wouldn't pay for it - everytime I drive somewhere I put the drink on the seat as the bumpy roads make the bottle shake/bounce so much I'm scared it'll break the cupholder.emoticon-0106-crying.gif

Polo cupholder part number is 6X0857558A (although it also has stickers saying 4B0885995 for some reason). As has been said, it's not great for bottles, but holds 330ml cans very snugly indeed. You will need to trim some of the mouldings from the top (not visible once installed), but we have them in both our Fabias.

I'll see about pics when I get the opportunity...

Right, this is my dash - forgot to mention that travel cups fit nicely too!

The slot above the cupholders isn't very deep, but with a layer of non-slip mat added, it make a very good place to put a Bluetooth phone...

Ok will give this a whirl, thanks ;)

nice one for that..

any ideas how much the part would cost?

^ That is NOT the same part, I'm afraid. I will look to see if I have an invoice, but I think both ours came from VAGParts, who have ceased trading...

Ahh ok my bad

Job done. One brilliant Tuner/CD/Bluetooth hands free now installed. Currently on offer at Halfords £30 off at £129. Kenwood KDC BT30 This bit of kit is worth every penny. Even voice recognition if you want to make a call !

Fits like a glove. Thanks to advise on this thread, only bought a bit of Skoda fixing for £3.00. Looks very neat. Also OE speakers fine with a much more powerful system.

The OE head unit was a pig to get out, friendly dealers did it in 2 minutes with their tools.

FM is brilliant but Medium wave not so good. Advised that the booster will not make much difference, simply really poor reception on MW in this part of the world. Shame that, as I like talk sport. Only draw back on a great unit.

No microphone leads, all built in ! Recommend
