hi, im looking at buying a 2004 fabia vrs with 118000 miles. im aware that the belts are due to be changed every 60,000 altho ive read on here that replacement belts are much superior and last double the time? is this true of will this car be due another cambelt at 120,000?

Not sure on the "double length of tme" thing. I had my second cambelt changed @ 135k. I was advised that a second waterpump change was not required though. I wouldn't want to risk it based on something I'd heard, even on here!!

4 years or 60k so needs one also at that mileage id replace the waterpump at the same time

I don't think you could buy one of the latest technology belts to suit your car. Also it's the combination of the belt improvements and improvements to tensioners and other engine details that give the increased life.The latest belt "tooth" profile & belt width is probably different anyway. Sorry to disappoint you but I think you should stick to original O.E.M. recommendations & original O.E.M. parts.Strongly agree that the waterpump should be changed at same time. If the waterpump seized it would take your new belt and engine with it. The waterpump renewal is not a big expensive job when done with the cambelt but is much more expensive if done on its own.

Thought VAG revised this to 60k / 4years.. then inspection of belt every 20k until replacement required or another 4 years pass?

Is this the same for blt and asz cars?

Only reason im asking is because i have a late 56 model and i wondered if they improved the belts and water pump towards the cars end of product life....

so how much do you reckon a cambelt and tensioners and water pump change would cost as wel as the service at 120,000 so i can knock the guy down? ;)

Think the pumps were improved quite early on, have read they moved from plastic propellers to metal and this increased their life.

I always thought this was the reason for changing them, that the plastic ones could throw a propeller with heat and age rather then seizing as mentioned above.. I'm almost certainly wrong though, lol.

waterpump is £60 iirc and they offer an exhange when you take your old one back

Not aware of any belt improvements as early as '56 Model. The new belt to my knowledge first appeared on the Golf MK6 with the new 1.6TDI C.R. engine , not sure about the other CR engines but with each new model or update they seem to extend the cambelt change interval.
